[xj40] cruise

hi Folks,
I am retro-fitting cruise to my 1991 4ltr but am struggling. I did
this to my previous XJ40 and have followed the same plan, but it
doesn’t work. My question as about the cruise relay. When I took
the knee panel off passenger side to expose the relays and fit the
ecu, there wasn’t an empty relay slot. In fact there isn’t one
labelled up for cruise at all. The one I was expecting is labelled
as seat control or something like that, but I don’t have electric
seats. . .
erm. . .
any ideas?

Ade,

According to the good book, On a '90 / '91 / '92 the cruise
control relay should be the one in a purple base on the
‘component panel’ under the passenger side dash. It may be
labelled ‘Auto Speed’.

[On the '89 and earlier cars they didn’t have that relay -
it was called a ‘continuity unit’ and was on the ‘A’ post
under the passenger side dash. Similarly on the '93 / '94
cars, no relay but all done in the Cruise Control ECU].

I have a sneaking suspicion that this has cropped up before
and there was some suggestion that the relays on that panel
were incorrectly labelled. If so, you are looking for the
relay base wired thus :-

pin 30 = Purple wire
pin 85 = Slate/black wire
pin 86 = White/black (or White/pink) wire
pin 87 = Purple/white wire–

Thanks Bryan,
Yes, there is a purple relay base which already has a relay in it.
It is a might full under there as there are relays hanging all over
the place for the alarm and I think, the LPG system. I will check
at the weekend for those colours.

The brake switch has 4 wires coming off it - two normally closed
and two normally open. Am I right in thinking that the two n/c
permanently energise the cruise relay and when you press the brake
pedal it breaks the circuit so the relay closes? I put my hand on
each relay and pressed the pedal and nothing happened.

Ade,

Not quite.

The cruise brake switch is the normally closed one,
(Brown/black and Purple wires) and it carries ignition
switched power from fuse #3 in the centre fuse box to pin 30
until you touch the brake pedal when it goes open circuit
and cuts off the power supply to the relay.

The relay is energised with ignition switched power from
fuse #7 in the centre fuse box on the White/black (or
White/pink) wire, the other side of the relay coil being
taken to ground via the transmission decoder module on the
Slate/black wire (pin 25 of the 26-way blue connector on the
module).–
