[xj40] Dash/switch backlights

While I’m hunting down my electron leak, I thought I might
tackle another problem.

The dash/switch backlights on my car are finicky - they
sometimes don’t work. or switch on only after a while.
I swear I hear some relay switching.

Are is the dash lights/backlights on some relay or something?–

I should be more specific. When I switch on my market lights
or markers/headlights they work fine. It’s just the dash and
switch lights that don’t come on. Only sometimes they will,
and sometimes they will after driving a bit. I’m pretty
positive I hear a ‘‘tick’’ sound when they do come on.–

Just checked, no tick when the backlights come on. The tick
is from the marker light relays come on.

With the market lights on, and me tapping the plastic housing
nearish the switch the backlights will sometimes come on.
Correlation is not causation, so I’m not sure if it’s me or
something else going on.–

AFAIK, there is not a specific relay which switches the
locate and dash lighting in and off - it is all done through
the CPU when the main lighting switch is operated.

The only thing which ‘interferes’ with that lighting is the
dimmer switch - and that has been known to be a source of
problems in the past. I think John S and/or others have had
to de-solder and re-make solder joints on the PCB which is
part of that dimmer device. Can’t think what would ‘tick’
though - but I’ve never seen inside one so can’t advise.–
