[xj40] Differences between xj40 and xj81 subframe and springs

I am posting this here in the hope that there are a lot of
similiarities between xj40 and x300. Haven’t had any luck
on the x300 forum so far and need an answer rather
urgently.

I would like to replace the springs on my XJ12. I found a
good offer for XJR springs and bought those. The rear ones
fit nicely. However the front ones seem to be too long.
Now I am wondering if this is due to a different sub-frame
the V12s have, or if the springs are just designed
differently (longer but lower spring rate).
I am not sure if I can fit these or not. Any advise would
be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Harald–

What is the part number of the front sprigs you purchased?

There were literally dozens of different front springs
fitted to XJ40s and X300s varying in length and stiffness
depending upon engine size, year, country, sports or
non-sports etc.

Browse through the catalogue to identify what you have bought:-

Bryan,

We already suggested to Harald that he peruse the JCP parts
lists and he has done so, but what he’s looking for is some
practical knowledge as to whether the springs he bought can
actually be installed on his car. I suggested that he pose
the question on the XJ40 forum since my understanding is
that the late XJ81 V12 model is internally very similar to
the X305 V12 model.

Thoughts?

Don,

Which is why I asked if he knows the part number of the
springs he bought. I suspect that absent that information he
has little chance of determining if those springs are the
correct length and rating for his V12.–

I would have thought the XJR springs would be a tad under sprung for the
weight of the V12?

In reply to a message from Robin and Maureen O’Connor sent Mon 24 Feb 2014:

Hi Robin,

That is what I thought, too. And I thought it wouldn’t be
too bad, as I have used 4 cylinder springs in 6 cylinder
BMWs without any problems.

But when I compared the old springs to the new ones I was
surprised to find the XJR ones are significantly longer
(about 5 cm) and are made from smaller diameter wire.
This made me wonder if the V12 springs are different due to
differences in the subframe.

The rear ones were the ones that really needed replacing
(and for the rear the XJR springs should be fine, they look
identical to the V12 ones and the weight on rear axle should
be very similar on both cars). The front ones are quite
rusty, but I think blasting and powder coating will help. So
I will probably do this to be on the safe side.–

Hi Bryan,

they are supposed to be replacements for JLM12340, made by
KYB. I don’t have the KYB part number right now.
