[xj40] Differential Bearings

Does anyone know of a complete differential bearing kit for the
1994 XJ6? Or a list of parts needed to do the job?–

Welsh Enterprises will have your bearings. If you’ve been
good about checking the lube level over the years but now
have a grumble that gets louder with speed, you probably
just need output shaft bearings.–

I do not believe there is a ‘kit’ as such. Best look at the
parts catalogue and select the bearings and seals you need
to do the job. You are aware of the special tooling required
to re-build a differential? You can see the procedure in the
appropriate Service Manual - available in CD-Rom format from
JDHT under number JHM1153.

If you only need the diff output shaft bearings and seals
(Items 13, 17 and 19 in the pictures) that job can be done
with the diff in the car but if you need pinion and main
carrier bearings and seals then you need the diff on the
bench - and that requires removal of the entire rear
suspension to extract the differential.

Some places sell (or used to) exchange output shafts
complete with a new bearing, seal and bearing retaining
collar which makes the job much easier and obviates the need
for a 10 ton press to fit the new bearing retaining collar.–
