[xj40] Door locks won`t lock. 91 XJ6. More info

Thank you for the response, Win
I tried pressing the switch on the dash with the key symbol while the ignition key was switched on
I got a rather lovely almost “quadrophonic” clicking from the various doors in succession but no locking of the doors. However, the sunroof closed.
Any ideas on what this might imply, please?

When the power locks ‘‘bump’’ like that, it’s a signal that
one of the locking modules is out of sync with the others.
So, when you press the switch for the doors to lock, the out
of sync module unlocks them.

Does suggest the slider in the lock or the micro switch is
at fault.

Often, it’s possible to simply manually unlock all the doors
and then re-lcok them from inside the car to re-sync them.
(won’t help if there’s a deeper problem)

Call me a heretic if you will, but to remove the locking
modules, I suggest you simply drill a pair of access holes
in the inner door skin to gain access to the screws that
hold the module to the door latch. I believe the ‘‘official’’
method is to remove the door glass and window frame before
removing the door latch just to get to the module.–

Win, I’ve been inside the doors on my '89 numerous times and
I’m not sure what you mean by the ‘‘lock modules’’. If you
really meant to say ‘‘lock motors’’ (some call them solenoids
but they actually are motors), drilling holes in the inner
door skin won’t help because the screws to be removed are
facing the other direction (you’d have to drill through the
outer door skin, and no one would do that).–
