[xj40] door locks

As you might remember, I have been having strange things happening
with my door locks (they lock on their own for no apparent reason).
Today, the car locked on me, when I tried unlocking it with the key
in the door, I found that it does not unlock from the passenger
side door, just the driver’s. Is this normal? or should they
unlock from either side? I am very rarely a passenger in this car
and had never tried to unlock the pass. door before today.

Thanks,
Jenni

be a great car!! :)–

Jenni,
I have a similar problem with my 89, sometimes the locks go crazy
in the locked position. I can open the drivers door as you can but
can’t open anything else (electrically) including the trunk. I
can’t open the trunk with the key when this happens. I found that
if I diconnect the connector on the lock control behind the dash on
passenger’s side that everything returns to normal. Could be dirty
pins in the connector or the control just gets confused and has to
be reset by pulling the plug. It has not happened in a while
leading me to think dirty connections. You might try the above if
your’s is still acting up - YMMV!!!

The battery in my 90 Sov has been going dead after sitting without starting for 3 or 4 days.To-day while I
was standing beside the car the door locks suddenly locked. Could this drain be a faulty module ? Has
anyone run into this—The battery checks out ok—is there a fuse I can pull to disable the locks in order to
check the drain?

since we got this car last thanksgiving, one of the rear doors
refused to open from the outside, but worked fine from the inside.
Recently the front passenger door started acting the same way.
Since the forcast for the weekend was for rain both days, it was,
naturally, sunny and dry, so I started taking the front door apart.
After several fits and starts, I discovered that the panels on a
VDP are different from the ones in the book, but got them off
anyway…and started fooling around in there…
I decided that the turnbuckle was the problem, and adjusted
same…a 9/32 ignition wrench works really well in that confined
space…and got the outside handle to operate as it should.
Buttoned everything back up and then blew it…the door wouldn’t
operate from either the outside or inside handle now!
I finally discovered it is barely possible to remove enough of the
uppe rdoor panel to allow access to the lower panel, to get enough
clearance to sorta reach in, and loosen the turnbuckle again, so I
could get the door open, at least…it seems that if you tighten
the turnbuckle too much, it interferes with the operation of the
lock butto/rod/solenoid…so fiddled and faddled around some more,
and finally got it working beautifully…thanks to my success in
the front, I took apart the rear door, and got it working too…the
wife is so pleased!!!
Many thanks to everyone who ever posted to this forum, as I
couldn’t have done it without all the posts I’ve read over the past
months on this, and many other topics…now, I still have the BFM
problem, and the ABS problem, but the doors work, and like I said,
the wife is pleased…–

hate to rain on your parade, but your door handles are bad.
adjusting them merely took up the slack left from the broken
handles. and more bad news, I have a set of 4 aftermarket handles
that only lasted 6 monthes. have not found a GOOD solution yet but
am considering door poppers. its either that or barn door latches!–

Hi all,

I am considering door poppers with electrical solenoids for my 92 XJ40.
All the plastic bits are breaking or broken on my door handles. Both
door locks will not unlock with the keys, the back passenger door does
not open the door anymore.
