[xj40] Door rubber seal

My door seal has split along the bottom and I cannot see how the door
tread plate/sill plate is fixed.
The only reference I can find is in the 1990-1991 Service Manual on the
CD which says to remove screws.
The screws are not obvious! If I peel off the ‘Daimler’ - Jaguar shiny
plate will I find them underneath.
And if I peel that plate off what is the best glue to use to stick it
down again?

TIA, Richard.–

Richard,

The shiny plate is held on by magnetism. The brown plastic stuff is
magnetic (like one of those 'fridge magnets).

You can remove the shiny plstic plate by sliding a broad bladed
knife under it from one end (something like a putty knife is good).
the silver plastic end caps in the extruded aluminium tread plate
can be pulled off the end in a horizontal direction but the plastic
legs that hold them in sometimes break so be careful. Be careful
too not to kink the shiny plate - it’s very thin material.

Underneath you will find 5 (or is it 6?) Torx head screws (see
archives for size - I’ve forgotten). Whilst you’re in there, be
prepatred to remove some rust from beneath the tread plate,
partcularly the ‘U’ channel which retains the rubber seal and which
is spot-welded to the door aperture. Nice little rust trap that.–

Whoops!

Second sentence read ‘metal’ not ‘plstic’ - whatever that is!–

When I did mine, I found (at WalMart) some double-sided magnetic
tape. It comes in a roll like electrical tape, and is quite thick,
with a layer of magnet on one side and sticky adhesive on the
other. It makes a great replacement for the magnet strip which, if
like mine turned out to be, broken in chunks due to heat, age and
(rust?).

btw, if only the bottom part of the seal is torn up (as is usually
the case) I’ve found it much easier to just cut out that part and
spice in a piece of good rubber from another old door seal. Trying
to push in those seals all around the door perimeter can be a
painful and quite lengthy process! :(–

Thank you to all.
A devilishly cunning method of fixing

I’ve just checked the price of a new seal - definitely a luxury item!!
