[xj40] Driver's door latch

Out of the blue yesterday, the driver’s door stopped
latching unless I throw the door closed like trying to latch
it on the other side of the car. My other XJ40s latch very
easy. I’m out of adjustment, and cannot see anything broken
inside the latch. Any ideas? Or will I have to replace the
latch?–

Pete,

First things that come to mind are:

  1. Check to see if the door hinge has sagged,

  2. Check that the interior door trim panel is firmly
attached along its lower edge and is not loose and catching
    on the door sill/treadplate.

  3. Try some white lithium grease spray in the door latch
mechanism while working the latch in case it’s sticking open,

  4. Check the condition of the door weatherstrip at the curve
about halfway up the B-pillar. Any additional thickness in
that area can cause the door to not want to latch.

Let us know what you figure out.

Now it seems to be latching as it should. I wonder whether
the blast of arctic air cooled the latch enough for the
lubrican’t to get stiff and fail the latch. I thinned the
grease down with some ATF. Maybe that will do the trick.
Thanks.–

Hi,
Have you checked the part fastened to the body (the
fixed bit the door latch engages with )has not moved inwards
and so further away from the door latch due to it rotating ?

I don’t think you would get a faulty latch to work just by
slamming the door harder,as you describe, it sounds like the
extra effort in closing the door that bit further is
allowing it to engage with that post ?

If that was the first thing you tried, or what you mean
when you mention ’ you are out of adjustment ’ forgive me
for stating the obvious, but you never mentioned checking if
that piece was tight or not. !!

hope you cure it soon.
good luck.–

The latch post in the B pillar is out as far as it allows.
The latch in the door is as far towards the body as the
holes in the door allow, and I disconnected the cable from
the inside latch and loosened the turnbuckle for the outside
latch (I can still reach in and trip the latch by hand) yet
it won’t latch unless slammed.
It appears that a squirt of ATF has cured the problem. Then
again it could be that it only gave me this problem at the
State Vehicle Inspection Station. I got the safety
certificate yesterday, and the latch seems to be working as
it should again.–
