[xj40] Electrical failure on 1994 XJ 40 Sovereign

Sometimes at ignition on the gauge will read empty, the
electronic range display will also read Zero the fuel
warning light will also be lit, however during the course of
driving the fuel gauge will begin to creep up, the warning
light will go out and the electronic display will creep up
in sympathy with the analogue display until both reading are
correct for the amount of fuel in the tank.
Any help would be appreciated.–

In reply to a message from montrose sent Thu 1 Mar 2012:

Sounds like a fuel level sender unit malfunction. You can
check it in-situ - see the Haynes manual chapter 4 Section
5. You should get a resistance reading of approximately 18
to 20 Ohms when the tank is full rising progressively to
approximately 190 to 200 Ohms when the tank is near empty
although those readings may vary slightly if you measure the
‘stop-to-stop’ resistance readings with the unit outside of
the tank - see this post from the archives :-
