[xj40] Extracting a stuck 6 disc CD magazine

My factory 6 disc trunk mounted CD player is refusing to
release the magazine and the Error code is E-01 (disc change
malfunction) The little light on the unit’s eject button is
not lighted. How does one manually extract the magazine?
Earlier I was having trouble with error codes but could
reset the player buy removing the magazine and refitting it.
Also who makes these players?–

John,

If you do a search on the XJ40 forum archive using ‘CD
magazine stuck’ as the keywords you will see a few threads
on the subject. The solutions suggested range from
unplugging the device at the rear to removing it and
dismantling the black box to extract the CD.–

John,

Try this to ‘unstick’ the magazine / cartridge: with the radio unit powered on and CD selected press in on the magazine and tap it sharply (but not too hard - it’s plastic!) with the handle of a screwdriver. This may unstick the mechanism.

Alpine provided the audio bits. The Alpine M-bus CD changers (CHM-S620 and -S630 for example) are compatible with the Jag radio / head units that have the CD option.

Hi,
You can use a thin plastic ruler inserted inside the CD
player to manually press the release mechanism. Push it in
over the top of the cartridge all the way to the back, as
you push it in you will feel it engage the spring loaded
catch and the cartridge will pop out, I’ve used this method
several times.

Good luck.–

Thanks for all the tips. I found one on the archives that
said unplug the cable at the CD player and try again. Doing
that and the thin ruler trick I was able to get the magazine
out and the apparent cause was remaining disc that was still
in the player mechanism. Then once the magazine was out the
machine gently expelled the remaining disc into the empty
space where the magazine resides. It is working OK now but
I am not convinced the issue may arise again. Time will tell.–

I agree with Mike Stone - I have just acquired my XKR, after it had sat in a garage for 7 years, and the CD cassette was stuck. I followed Mike’s advice and tapped the front right of the cassette, quite hard, with the handle of a screwdriver while holding down the Eject button. After three or four slides of the mechanism the cassette popped out, and a little light oiling of the mechanism now has it ejecting smoothly.

Wow, the post to which Michael refers is 7-1/2 years old - the power of the archives! Hey Grooveman - see, some folks DO use the archives! :astonished: Glad it was of help, and welcome to the XJ40 section of J-L.

Yes, welcome! While I’m posting I just want to offer that I believe a large number of folks use the archives and find what they need there without needing to ask a question. This has been true for me many times since I bought my Jag 3 months ago. My own personal failure iin these cases is not thanking the many contributors for their very valuable information. So, here’s a big shout out to all of you! I think I’ll create a post describing the issues I’ve researched on this site.

Well, 7 years after my first post, I still have periodic stuck disc issues. I learned how to remove the unit from the trunk, take out the small screws on the bottom cover turn the large white gear to raise the disc to the level of the black rollers and push the disc out. When this happens it seems the magazine is partially unlatched and slightly out of place. Since the unit performs well for a number of hours of playing, cycling through a number of discs, I have resorted to leaving the bottom cover off so that access to the white gear is easier. I cover the bottom with a sheet of cardboard for protection. I am wondering if the latching mechanism for the magazine is the root cause. Perhaps I should devise a way to wedge the magazine in place.

I had many issues over the years even replacing the stacker (twice) so last year I bought the little digital plug-and-play box to replace the stacker.

I was having the same problem for a few years. The changer would work perfect for months then it would try and jam two discs into the same holder and I’d have to remove the cover and wind the mechanism by hand to retrieve it. I noticed this usually occurred during long spells of wet weather and despite my carpets and other boot trim remaining dry to the touch condensation would form on and around the changer unit. I placed the complete changer inside a clear zip front poly bag and placed a bag of silica gel inside. It’s been at least two years since I did that and it hasn’t messed up once in that time.
