[xj40] Failed Emission

Hey fellas…

My 94 xj6 failedIt failed an emission test today. I was shocked.

The car runs great, as far as I can tell no problems. It
failed the hydrocarbon part. The Stadard was 0.9000 GPM and
my car got 0.9973 GPM. It passed hte cabon monoxide and
oxides of nitrogen part. What do you all think? The guy at
the emission place said to drive it on the highway for about
20 min then bring it to the test center again. I didn’t have
time for it today. Can a car that was sitting for awhile
that gets tested have more gas ‘build-up’ that cause it to
fail a test?

Does it sound like catalytic problem? How should I approach
this without having to spend hundreds?

Thanks.

IIRC, someone posted (back in December?) that they did
exactly the same thing after that failure: a quick blast to
get her really warmed up, then back to the test centre. An
archive search for ‘emissions’ would probably turn it up.–

Hi Steve,

How many miles/years on your O2 sensor(s). If more than 50K miles/5
years, then I would suggest replacing the O2 sensor, as that can make a
HUGE difference in HC emissions.

A leaking fuel pressure regulator diaphragm would leak excess fuel
into the intake. The car would run rich and fail the test.

An easy thing to check, remove the vacuum hose to it and smell for
raw gas.–

Steve the same thing happened to my 89vdp last year.George
mentioned the 02 sensor and I replaced mine at the time. Other
items you should look at are the air filter, a change of oil, check
your plugs and give it a good run 10 to 15 miles at 60 or 70 mph
and drive it directly in to retest. The engine must be at operating
temp. Good Luck John.–

sounds like your lambda/02 sensor could be dodgy. after a lot of
use it can just get dirty and tell the ECU the wrong info, which
could make the engine run rich.
if thats not the problem, try what john suggested; check filters,
plugs etc and give it a good run to get it up to temp before
getting it tested again.–

Hi Steve,

Here’s one source of 3-wire sensors: $80 for the OEM which you install
as-is, and $46 for the universal sensor, where you have to splice the
connectors from the old sensor:
