[xj40] Fuel fail 39?

Hi all
I seem to be having a problem with my 1990 XJ6. Fuel fail 39 EGR
valve. After removing the code I had no more check engine light.
The car is coming up for its California smog check, and I thought I
would check the EGR valve, put a vacuum to it it did not work
defective diaphram, so I went further, at normal temp there is no
vacuum to the valve, tested the vacuum switch, that worked, vacuum
from the manifold ok. Then I pulled the throttle body cleaned that
up, replaced the EGR valve sensor, as its resistance was off,
blowed air through the pipes cleaned the carbon off the port inside
the manifold. So it looks like my problem could be the ECU anyone
have any ideas.I also replaced the EGR valve

It seems to me that you fixed the problem by replacing the EGR. Do have
reason to think the EGR system is not working now? The EGR check is
effective, so if you don’t get a code, the EGR system is OK.

Don’t expect to see vacuum to the EGR. That only occurs under certain
driving circumstances.

I thought there should be vacuum at the EGR valve under light load
normal temp. There is no vacuum at this point.
any comments.–

I would not depend on it Glenn. I would depend on the ECU tests to tell me
if anything is wrong though.

If the temperature sensor in the throttle body area does not see an increase
within a set time after the ECU commands the EGR to open, it sets the code.
That’s a pretty good check that everything is working as it should.

If you don’t have a code - you don’t have a problem. Relax
