[xj40] Fuelling Failure 1988

The Green One is giving me a Fuelling Failure alert. When I turn
the key to position 1 to stop the engine, then back to position 2
to turn on the VCM display. I press the VCM button and the thing
just indexes through the list of alarms. I know there is going to
be a fuelling code in there somewhere, but the VCM will not display
it.
When idling, the air pump clutch cycles every 5 to 10 seconds. And
it generally requires flooring the accellerator pedal to fire it
up. Once running, it behaves itself.
How do I get the codes to display?–

In reply to a message from Jaguarpete sent Wed 27 Jun 2007:

My question is now acedemic, rather than urgent. This

morning, I replaced the coolant temperature sensor and cleared the
fuelling failure alarm on the VCM. In April, I experienced the
same situation in my Gray One on the way to the emissions testing
facility here in Maryland. It turned out to be a failed coolant
sensor, so I picked up two of them at my favorite DIY salvage yard
(after all, the Gray One has just 10,000 more miles on it than the
Green One), figuring I’d have another failure soon.
The symptoms of a failed sensor are: Fuelling failure on the
VCM, refusal to start when hot, smell of gasoline when trying to
start, and rapid cycling of the air pump at idle. In each
instance, we were able to get the car started by flooring the
accellerator and the cars ran well enough to complete the errands
we were on.
Both of the bad sensors have a brass body with white plastic
connector. They were replaced with sensors made from black plastic.–
