For the archives I have posted photos documenting the
service of the fuseboxes in our '93. Others have reported
the common issue of cold solder joints, which were present
in both of our A-pillar boxes. Our center fuse box also had
some odd whitish corrosion around some of the connector
pins. The corrosion appeared to be related to the plating
on the copper pins, which I presume is silver. Given the
problems others have reported and the internal condition of
our fuseboxes, it may be prudent for all XJ40 owners to
perform this service preemptively.

Johan, the problem with clicking the link in the post is a couple of extraneous hyphens are appended to the end of the URL. Try either clicking the link and once the J-L page has opened delete the extraneous characters from the URL (address) or copy and paste this into your browser’s address bar: http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1388005692
Mike is right but unfortunately Don’s XJ40 archive hasn’t been brought over to the new (!) platform so all you can see are the thumbnails …this is unfortunate because Don’s archive is the most complete repair photo journal on the XJ40, anywhere.
Almost all topics are covered in detailed photographs accompanied by excellent written descriptions. At least the thumbnails still appear. (for now)
Unless your footwell fuseboxes are corroded beyond recognition, a simple reflow of the solder joints on the back of the circuit board usually fixes things.
Unplug them and take them out first of course!
Thank you for the helpful tip to Johan about the extraneous hyphens!
Larry,
Thank you for the very kind words!
Johan,
I hope to find the time to assist in the transfer of my photo albums to the new servers, but I’ve been extremely busy with work the past several years and haven’t been able to get to it. I hope you will at least find the thumbnails and descriptions helpful for now.
Thanks Mike - I found it
I dismantled the fuse box and inspected it closely. No cold soldering was suspected but maybe the connection pins was a bit dull grey.
Mine is a model year 1992 and it looks slightly different then earlyer / later versions.
Connection over the soldering points seemed fine as well as the diods ohm value.
Serviced the fuse box and pins with electronic cleaner + connection spray.
Will test the result tomorrow
Oh I see that’s the centre fusebox in the arm rest …never had any trouble with that, it’s the footwell boxes that usually have issues.
What is the actual issue you are trying to remedy, Johan?
Well, I had the problem with the gerabox changing gear rapidly up and down. (Separate thred)
I thought I solved it by changing the Speed controle relay but that fix didn´t last for long.
My theory is that the gearbox problem is electrical/electronical and might be related to the speed controll - therefor I wanted to service the central fuse box.
Do you tagree with my theory ?
Not had that issue so can’t really comment other than are you checking the trans fluid level as per the book?
AFAIK, engine warmed and idling, apply brake and move trans selector back and forth through the gears then put her in park and dip the level. It should read close to the H mark.
Transmission had a full service just recently so I didn´t check level untill today. It is a bit above Hi and as i remember a minor overfill is not critical.
However - I took a 1h testdrive today on a nice contry road and the car vas behaving perfectly. No transmission problems att all.
Lets hope the issue is solved.
