There was an excellent article in the JWM March 2004 issue
covering dash removal (pre- and post- airbag)to remove the
evaportator. That is no longer available as a ‘back issue’
so I am sending a copy to robhair via PM.
I hope his mechanic has correctly diagnosed the fault -
getting at the aircon evaporator is doable but …! ;-)–

I’ve removed the dash on my '89 three times now to deal with the
center vent and dash top demisters.
It’s a very straightforward job that involves removing a lot of
bolts and screws and a fair amount of disconnecting electrical
plugs.
If your going to do it for the first time be prepared to spend the
better part of a full day.
Here’s a tip, place a piece of cardboard somewhere where it won’t
be disturbed and position each fastener on it in the relative
position it came out of the dash. You’ll be really happy you did
when you reinstall it.–

After removing both knee bolsters you have to remove 10 bolts.
That’s not too much. And disconnect some plugs but they’re color
coded and have different size and shape (at least on my '94). Last
time it took me 30 min.–

Joe…
Wow, you can remove your dashtop in 30 minutes…you must have
installed it with Velcro!
I’ve gotten my time down significantly after 3 removals but nowhere
near that. For a first timer I still think several hours would be
pretty realistic.
By the way I was looking at your excellent photo’s and noticed
something. Unlike your '94 my '89 didn’t have a bicycle under the
dash that also needed to be removed…obviously that didn’t slow
you down one bit!

Dennis,
From your last two posts I can see why it took you so long.
You obviously did everything TWICE! :-)–

Dennis,
yeah, last time I removed it pretty quickly. Honestly I didn’t
check the time but it was definitelly less than an hour.
After removing both knee bolsters there are 4 bolts that hold the
instrument cluster, 2 bolts at each end of the dash and 1 bolt each
side of the center console. Oh yeah, maybe some screws behind the
center wood.
What do you mean by bicycle?

OK OK … Just when I try to put a little humor into everyone’s
humdrum life I get hammered by technology (and my friends)!
I tried to include a picture out of Joseph’s photo album with my
post and all I ended up with was that crazy long http address.
(Bryan, if you’ve finally composed yourself what did I do wrong?)
I cannot be held responsible for JL’s glacier server. I actually
waited a good 5 minutes and the post never went through so I fired
it again!
You see Joseph had a picture of some of the dash parts he was
removing sitting right in front of his bicycle and of course I
instantly saw the humor in including it in the…OH NEVER MIND!

Dennis,
now I know what picture you’re talking about.
That bicycle is my emergency transportation. Ok, sometimes it
serves as an exercising equipment. Just sometimes ‘cause this town
is the capital of the snowbirds (’‘more experienced drivers’’ if you
know what I mean) and on those two wheels I’m a lot more vulnerable
for those nice folks.

I agree with your comment about the ‘glacier’ slowness of
the J-L site. It is getting worse.
Hopefully the new version being constructed will solve that
problem.–

Could you tell me where I can find that artical on dash removal or
send me a copy of it? I have a '94 with center vent heater issues
that I need to take care of.

Hello All,
I removed my dash and wrote a detailed article about it in
the archives over a year ago, but here is the condensed
version. I strongly recommend some 3x5 cars and small clear
baggies to put your screws and parts in, lableing precisely
where each set of pieces are removed.
Remove knee kick plates for passenger and driver
Unhook electrical connections to back of speedometer binnacle
Unbolt the binnacle and remove
Remove the four (13mm?) (two on the far left and right
underneath the dash) that hold down the dash.
Unscrew the two bolts above the transmission tunnel that
go through brass covered rods that tie the dash to the
horseshoe collar assembly
Remove/reposition the center ski slope. Start by
removing the ashtray, then with finger tips, undo the nylon
wing nuts at the very back/bottom of the ski slope. NOTE:
Before starting all of this, put the transmission selector
in NEUTRAL as the ski slope can’t be slid backwards without
hitting the selector in park. Also, there is no need to
remove the radio
There are two large screws behind the top of the ski slop
((below the air vents) that need to be removed
Pop off the center veneer around the center air vent and
remove the black plastic vent vanes. This will give you
access to two large Phillips screws that hold down the
center of the dash.
Now the hard part…there are about 25+ electrical
connections on the passenger/drier side of the dash that
need to be unplugged. Fortunately they are all color coded.
the bad news is they all come apart slightly differently.
Some have a tab on one side, others both side, some you push
down from the top, others the side, etc. Just be careful
not to force anything.
The dash top can be removed. There are a couple of
electrical connections to the dash top too.
Installation is the proverbial ‘‘reverse.’’
If you’d like to see some detailed pics of the inner dash
guts, see:
I can do it in 1:40 flat (now) but the first time it was 20
hours in/out. Good luck.–
