With the bonnet open and the engine off, reach in with your foot
and floor the gas pedal. Watch the capstand on the throttle
shaft. It should rotate around and hit the mechanical stop before
you run out of pedal. If it doesn’t the throttle cable has
stretched and most likely the ‘kick down’ cable has stretched as
well. You will see where to adjust (shorten) the cables.
The throttle cable can be adjusted all at once. Make smaller
adjustments to the kick down cable mixed with test runs until you
are satisfied with the shifting.–

I’m not sure from your last post what you might have previously checked
or tested regarding the kickdown cable. A worn or sticking kickdown
cable can cause the condition you describe, as it will NOT “spring
back” until the engine compartment temperature warms and the cable
frees up (in the early failure stages). This mechanical kickdown cable
was used on the 1987-1989 models with the HP22 transmission.
I would suggest when you go out to the car first thing in the morning,
open the bonnet (don’t start the engine), check the position of the
kickdown cable, to see if it is fully returned. Then rotate the
throttle capstan by hand about 1/3 open and release it. See if the
kickdown cable fully returns, or if it stands slack.
If it sticks rather than fully returning, check the kickdown cable
sheath as it runs back to the firewall/bulkhead and downward. Mine was
worn from rubbing against the firewall. I taped the worn area and
lubricated the cable, and restored normal upshift operation. Don’t
continue to operate the vehicle with delayed upshift, as that can
quickly wear the clutches in the transmission and result in a very
expensive rebuild.

I don’t know why this happens, but I think I know what you mean.
If the car is cool, and you start accelerating normally the first
upshift into second is delayed. Do you hear a roaring also? Then,
after one minute, the roaring disappears.
I did not have this issue until I reconnected the air-intake pump some
years ago (it had disconnected for a reason I never knew).
It maybe that the delayed upshift and the roaring have nothing to do,
too. Also, when you’re accelerating really slowly, does the car kick
into second? (Under normal temp.)
Recently I replaced all the clutches, they failed after 20-years of
service, but that did not help.
I hope this helps you pin down the problem.
