Hi,i’ve got a 1987 XJ40,wich I use for rallycros.Last race
yesterday, the gearbox failed. It is working only in reverse gear, all
forward gears are gone. The box is a ZF automatic.Since I am not
familiar with automatic gearboxes, can someone help me out on this
one?
Thanks,kris–

If the oil level is okay, check the filter to see if it is dirty.

From here you need skills…Check to see if the main pressure
control vavle is seized, after this you could have a bad A clutch
or slipping oneway clutch on D clutch. The last two are rebuilds of
the tranny.–

Where is this filter…

Take off the trans oil pan (after draining and saving the fluid) and the filter is right there.

You need to measure the amount of fluid you drain in order to refill the trans to the same level, you don’t want to put too much back in after cleaning or replacing the filter.
