[xj40] Green high pressure sphere

Hi there
Just a question to you experts
I have been reading a study on the XJ40 and notice in the engine
bay some cars have a small green sphere attached or near to the
brake servo and some don’t. Is this a later addition or is it
something to do with cars with self levelling? I thought that cars
with self levelling had a separate accumulator elsewhere similar to
that installed on Citroens
Thanks in advance

Jim,

Mmm, are you sure it’s green?

The '90 + XJ40s, have a Teves brake system in which there is
an electrically driven hydraulic pump using the actual brake
fluid for brake boost and ABS control. That stores energy in
an hydraulic accumulator near the brake servo, but that
sphere is black (at least on all of the ones I’ve seen).

It has nothing to do with the self levelling suspension
which is powered separately via the engine driven hydraulic
pump using HSMO from a separate reservoir and a Girling
valve block to control pressure to the rear shocks.

On the earlier cars, they have a Girling system which uses
HSMO for SLS and brake boost powered by that same engine
driven hydraulic pump and its accumulator is mounted low
down on the front right side chassis rail in the engine bay.–

I’m not sure it is green - maybe I am getting confused with those
fitted to Citroens!–

FYI…I believe that the Citroens sphere will fit
the XJ40.

Peter,

I do not believe that is true for either the pre-'90
non-Teves cars or the '90 + cars with a Teves system which
have a different accumulator sphere.

A company close to my home are Citroen hydraulics
specialists who are sometimes able to re-charge with
nitrogen Citroen accumulator spheres (if they have good
diaphragms). About 6 years ago, they said that they could do
a similar job on Jag spheres or for 40 + VAT would machine
off the Citroen boss and weld on an M16 x 1.5 mm thread boss
to fit the pre-'90 XJ40 accumulator base. That seems to
indicate that the original Citroen unit will not fit an XJ40.

I know that at least one forum member did fit a BMW
accumulator sphere to his '87 XJ40. To do that he had to
open up the accumulator base on his car from its riginal M16
thread to M18 x 1.5 mm and modify the strap attachment to
accomodate the larger diameter BMW sphere.

Of course, owners of Teves equipped cars are better served
since you can buy a brand new German made OEM replacement in
the US from AC-direct (AC Delco P/N 25528382) for about $100
USD.–

Bryan,

You are absolutely right. I had totally forgotten
about the different thread size. I obviously had a
senior moment !
Recently got a new sphere from Prestige in Australia
and their spheres are also re-chargable. The extra
3/4" at the end of the sphere just misses the spring
if you push it all the way forward in the clamp. Have
not had a problem with it for about eight years. This
is my second sphere.
BTW…I did not have it recharged. Am looking for a
place that will do it.
