[xj40] Handbrake rattle

Hello, I have that terrible rattle from rear when driving
over small bumps or cracks, after checking the archives I
thought it was the shocks but I’ve changes the shocks and
springs (different story, SLS) the rattle remained. Yesterday
I lifted the car and checked everything but nothing was
loose. I went to the X-300 forums as there are many common
parts (my car has the hybrid rear suspension) and found a
topic where the guy actually had the same problem and it was
the handbrakes. I checked mine and needed 6-7 clicks on the
lever to make the handbrake effective, I drove around with 2
-3 clicks on and the rattle disappeared and came back when I
released the lever.
Can I simply adjust the handbrake cable (and how) or should I
change something?

Thanks,

Wal

In reply to a message from Walkie sent Sun 20 Jun 2004:

Wal,

Since the handbrake on these cars is a drum brake separate from the
rear disc/pad brakes, the first thing you should do is make sure
that the shoes in the drum are properly adjusted (Haynes Chapter 9,
Section 5, illustration 5.7c).

If that doesn’t fix it, there is a cable adjuster on the
intermediate cable (the length just before the cable balance /
equaliser shoe). Let’s hope no-one has fitted the LWB cable in that
position by mistake! :-)–
