[xj40] hard starting popping back and wont rev up

thanks for past help,my new problem on my xj40 1988 2.9 engine is
hard starting at times, when it does start it wont rev up or idle.It
pops back through the induction system when it wont start at all,
there appears to be no signal to injectors when tested with signal
tester,my gut feeling is a crank sensor fault any advice
appreciated.

Do you have sparks at the plugs?–

In that case, your CPS is OK.

Can you check the timing? Plug leads in correct firing order?

Fuel pressure test OK?

Vacuum test OK?

Popping back through the intake suggests an inlet manifold leak or
perhaps a damaged valve.–

i had a sinilar problem on my 89 3.6.
the woodruff key and keyways had worn on the crank wheel, putting
the ignition timing out.
worth getting a strobe to check it.
