[xj40] Head...valve adjustment?

Got the head off and it is in the shop. When I was taking the cams
and valves out I noticed that the intake valve seating area was
clean and bright. The exhaust valves seating area was a lot
darker. We had good compression on this engine when this mess
started so I wasn’t planning on adjusting or grinding the valve.
Now thinking of just lapping the exhaust ones a bit. Also noticed
some wear on the shims, more than enough to catch your finger in,
should we adjust them, more work than I want to do!

Also on the exhaust side the last stud, by the firewall was a very
short stud on the end that went into the head? Normal? Had a ‘‘B’’
marked on the short end? To be honest it came out so quickly I
thought it had broken! Hole looked the same depth as the others
and clear. Plan on replacing the studs, are any available in
stainless or is that a waste of effort?

How big of hassle is the front seal? Since it is a bit more open
that usual.

Didn’t look like much corrosion on and in it and the passages
looked pretty good. We shall see what the shop has to say.–

In reply to a message from Bimbi sent Fri 11 Aug 2006:

I would hand lap all the valves, intake and exhaust. Hand lapping
won’t take appreciable metal off the valves, so you will be able to
re-use the shims. If there is a bit of stem wear on the shims,
simply turn them over for another 100,000 miles.
I think the head bolts are chrome-moly and mush stronger than a
stainless steel bolt would be. I put a bit of nickel never-sieze
on the threads and re-used the bolts on both of my 88s last year.–
