[xj40] help? 92 XJ40 boot latch broke

I have been lazy in replacing my sagging boot struts and it
finely happened. The boot lid fell from fully open without
any resistance from the struts and slammed down on the
latch. The latch lever will not work and feels like
nothing is connected and in the closed posission. Can
anyone please give me some advice on how to open the boot
to repair the lever. Thanks again for all your help.

Jim,

First off - have you tried to unlatch the boot lid by
operating the switch in the glove-box?

If that doesn’t work,on your US car you should remove the
rear licence plate and you should see a hole in the panel
through which you can poke a thin screwdriver, waggle ity
around until you trip the boot latch linkage.

If that doesn’t work, see this post with suggested surgery :-

Jim,

Did you try releasing it with the switch in the glove box?

That is where the boot release is my newly purchased 1992 Vanden Plas
Majestic.

The easiest way I’ve had to gain access to a locked boot
without a key or power is to remove the rear number plate
and upper right plastic backer for the number plate screw.

Slide the open end of a 10mm spanner (jaws facing to the
left) inward and slightly upward at that upper right slot
till the jaws straddle the latch operating rod (only a few
inches). Lever upwards on the operating rod by pressing
downward on the exterior portion of the spanner.–

I attempted that license plate, etc., access on a friend’s '92 and
found there was no such hole access. So he is still shut off
literally. He already has an issue of the entire door lock system
and that my be impairing the boot latch release. I was disappointed
to not find the hole access I had read about before.–

You use the SLOTS for the license plate mount screws in the boot
rear panel for access.

From memory my '88 did not have any slots for the rear number plate and I
resorted to drilling about a 12mm hole and using a screwdriver to trip the
latch.
