Hi Rob,
just a few thoughts on your extra fuel consumption.
The first thing I would do is sort out why it is ’ missing ’
at about 80 kph. Even if it has done this for a while
without affecting the fuel consumption, maybe it is now, and
also you might just prevent something more expensive going
wrong.

Forgive me if the following seems obvious, but not knowing
if you are mechanically minded or not here are a few other
things that push up fuel use.

The mileage per gallon on my Sovereign drops quite a bit
when the tire pressures are only 4/5 psi below recommended.

A sticking brake caliper could also cause fuel consumption
to rise ( I may be wrong here but I think your model year
may be susceptible to this ) have you jacked up each corner
to see how free each wheel is ?

Using the A/C climate control drinks a lot more petrol too,
as does driving with the side windows down.
Anyway good luck sorting it out, with fuel prices the way
they are every drop is precious.

Hi Rob!

You can also check the air and the fuel filters (cheap and easy to
replace them), if You keep something unwanted stuff in the trunk
take it out and try to readjust the wheel bearings too to make sure
the wheels spin freely.
Also check the spark plug wires and of course the tire pressure
needs to be checked every week.
Good luck.

Dear Rob,

Disconnect the plugs to the air mass meter and the water
temperature sensor (the one with the two wires) and squirt
in some WD40 or similar cleaning fluid. Connect the plugs
and disconnect them a few times to clean the contacts. It
is a good idea to so treat all the connectors in the engine
bay. You can prise the connectors apart with a flat
screwdriver by inserting the screwdriver into the slot and
then turning the screwdriver. Remember to press in the
locking tabs. Don’t attempt to pull them apart. The
connectors can suffer from invisible contamination which
will alter the resistance of the contacts and thus send
incorrect information to the engine management system.

I do it on my XJ40 about three times a year. Worth trying.

Regards,

Peter Parsons. UK.–

Sorry, haven’t been following this thread, but I’ve had experience with
above. Our '93 VDP was running awfully rich last year, to where you could
smell raw gas in the exhaust at idle. Don’t remember what chemical I used,
but I cleaned the MAF sensor and some other things, which fixed it. I load
connectors under the hood with dielectric grease to keep out contamination
and prevent corrosion. Ford used to do that 20 years ago, but no more.

Had the opposite problem with my '02 Ford Windstar the other day: error
code for running too lean. The guy at Autozone in the US showed me a new
product from CRC. It is a MAF sensor cleaner in a spray can, which leaves
no residue. Haven’t driven it enough yet to see if the code clears and
stays away. Other cleaners can leave residue on the sensor wires, to the
point of ruining the sensor.
