[xj40] ***HELP PLEASE*** HIGHWAY SPEED VIBRATION

Thank you for reading - please help if you can… I have a 1988
XJ6 VD…I really enjoy the car, however, I need to fix this
problem… At around 70 mph when ACCELERATING (pressing the gas
petal) I get a serious vibration throughout the car. It is felt and
even seen through my real view mirror as the reflections are
blurred. When I let off the accelerator it STOPS and the ride is
smooth… When I drop speed under 50 mph it isn’t near as bad as at
70 mph. When I go above 70 mph it is really bad… Everything I’ve
read relates to the opposite…

Thanks for your help - it’s really appreciated…–

In reply to a message from belair9007 sent Thu 9 Mar 2006:

Sounds to me to be drive train related. If it were a tire out of
round or bulging, the vibration would be there whether you had your
foot on the gas or not. But because the vibration goes away as
soon as you let off the gas, I have to believe it’s drive train
related. I suspect it’s the steady bearing for the drive shaft.
The ZF automatics don’t usually display that kind of vibration.–

Is that VDP then its a Fed Spec car
Could be a bad jurid. Check the archives and use Jurid.
Or you could have a bad center bearing
Or you could have a bad transmission mount
Or you could have bad universals
You need to do a lot more checking out before that question can be
answered. A good idea would be to use the above words in a search of
the archives for posts on this subject as it has been covered
extensively many times.
Don’t know what you read but vibration usually increases with speed. In
the case of wheels it works on the first, and second harmonic. In other
words you can drive through the out of balance condition with an out of
balance tire. Its usually not possible to drive through a harmonic or
critical speed of a drive shaft. The vibration is usually worse
above 50 mph
As for the mirror blurring, that is common over 50 mph on older cars and
that has been covered. If that is your measure of bad then you don’t
have a major problem. The solution to the vibrating mirror is to put a
an eraser between mounting stem and the window [pushed up and out of
sight it works fine].
