[xj40] hydraulic suspension (rear)

Where can I order XJ40 Diamler '91 hydraulic rear suspension parts
for this car? I can get a regular suspension to replace it, but
the car’s original is hydraulic. Would regular be okay if I can
not find the hydraulic?–

You can still obtain the 'ride-levelling (or ‘SLS’ as it is more
commonly known) suspension shocks (dampers).

Two adverts for them I have seen recently are:-

  1. ‘‘XJ40 shocks by Boge - self levelling 178 UKP each’’ from the
    Jag Shop [www.jagshop.co.uk , e-mail = jagshopuk@aol.com ,
    Telephone +44(0)208 7487824 , Fax +44 (0)208 5630101]
    Address 303 Goldhawk Road, London W12 8EZ

  2. ‘‘XJ40 self levelling rear shock absorbers 171.55 UKP each’’ from
    Norman Motors Ltd [Telephone +44 (0)207 431 0940 , Fax +44 (0)207
    794 5034]
    Address 100 Mill Lane London NW6 1NF

[No doubt other UK suppliers will sell them too]

You cannot simply fit standard shocks to replace the SLS shocks.
You need to fit a conversion kit which includes a number of items
including new shocks and the essential longer standard springs (see
the archives for details of kit content).

Both the above suppliers offer conversion kits for 347 UKP (but
you must ensure that that includes the new road springs - it’s
Sunday so I can’t check with them for you).

As you can see, by the time you have bought replacement SLS shocks,
you are paying about the same as for a complete conversion kit with
standard shocks which will last MANY times longer than the SLS
items. further more, if your car is '90 or later with the Teves
brake boost system, when you have converted from SLS to standard
rear suspension, you can then remove all of the rest of the
troublesome / leak prone Power Hydraulic stuff (the pump, valve
block and all of the associated hydraulic lines) and then run your
power steering on normal ATF instead of the expensive HSMO.–
