[xj40] Instrument clicking

Folks,

I recently bought a '40 - a late 88 Sov, to keep my XJS company,
and it seems very good - my mechanic saw it this morning and he
said it was in excellent condition (no oil leaks, new shocks etc).
One thing that puzzled us both, though was a regular ticking sound
coming (apparently) from the instrument panel when accelerating,
but not at any other time. It must be electrical because it
interferes with the radio if it is set to AM.

I will have a look at the relays with the car in park, but does
anybody have any ideas??

Cheers!

My '91 has plenty of clicks and ticks, from the relays I
understand. I believe this is a common issue, but not necessarily a
problem. Everything electrical works fine on my car.

As for acceleration, I believe these models have a kickdown switch
for the transmission (please correct me if I’m wrong) when the gas
pedal is floored. Could the relay audibly click if you’re still in
first???

Just a thought.

Thanks James - I know it isn’t kickdown, but still havent tried to
isolate the relay which does it. As you say, everything electrical
works fine. Next guess is the fuel pump relay, so I have posted
another question on the forum about this.

Cheers

On my '89 Xj6, the first sign of failure of the left side upper
shock absorber bushing was a persistent clicking sound upon
acceleration. It sounds like it is coming from the instrument
cluster.

Having had my cluster out a LOT, I can’t recall anything in that
area that can make a clicking sound …

In no way, however, could a perishing upper shock mount bushing,
affect your radio reception, so I would make certain the clicking
and radio reception problem are in fact related.

Even though ‘‘clunking’’ is the usual descriptive term for failure of
the upper shock mount bushing, I have found that failure begins
with clicking under acceleration, and squeaking occurs long before
you get to clunking …

Try tightening up this bushing …
