[xj40] Intermittent FF39 has me stumped

My intermittent FF39 has me stumped. I’ll clear it and
months can go by before another 39 is flagged. Tonight I
received another FF39.

The last one was on 1/19/2010. At that time I suspected a
bad vac hose at the EGR nipple, I fixed it and no FF39 codes
since that time.

Could a dying EGR valve act in a random way? This valve was
replaced 9.5 years ago / 67,000 miles ago.–

Any chance the EGR port going into the intake manifold has
become clogged? It’s a pretty common problem.

I’m unsure that actually triggers the FF39, the EGR temp
sensor or the O2 sensor but either way, poor gas flow into
the intake is the cause of the FF39. If you’ve got some
faith in the EGR valve and vacuum system, it’s time to look
at the other end of the EGR system.–

It was 1 hour ago that I visited that port. It didn’t have
the mountian of crud that I’ve seen in previous years but
there was some moist type of crud. I cleaned the little bit
that was there and did the usual cleaning of the TB and
plate adjustment.

If it weren’t for the lower right bolt, the job takes me
about an hour and15 minutes. The lower bolt never wants to
start threading into the hole and OF COURSE it is the place
that is hardest to get to.

Now time will tell if it was the little bit of moist stuff.
It took 2 months between the last FF39.

ERR solenoid is about 1 year old.
EGR valve holds vacuum

I can’t remember but is the EGR valve only in use during
open loop / closed loop or at all times when needed?

When it threw the code there was not one bit of difference
in how the car ran.–

Hi,

This may be unrelated but about two years ago I started to
get FF39 showing occasionally. I did all of the things you
have done so far but the code would still come back every
few weeks.

The car would run perfect despite the code appearing.

One morning it just refused to start without any warning.
The in-tank fuel pump had failed. It refused to spin with
12 volts directly connected to the terminals.

I replaced the pump to get the car started and since that
day that code has never reappeared once.

Good luck–

Thanks for the tip but the fuel pump replaced in the fall of
2009.–
