[xj40] No brakes! and leaking hmso fluid

As I was in the fast lane doing 100 I found that my brakes
have given up. There is no braking power. I was in the
process of doing a round trip Derbyshire to London and the
problem occured 30 minutes down the M1 so I carried out the
trip and too it very easy! I took a look in the engine and
noticed that the black cap on top of the green Power Hydralic
HMSO reservoir is not attached, dont know whether its broken
off or it fits back on somehow but I cant get it to stay on
and a HUGE puddle of yellow fluid just in front of the front
right wheel. I now cant drive it obviously, does anybody have
any ideas as to why the cap wont go on or has it broken?
there is a spring and a yellow ball bearing under the cap.

thanks for any help,
Steve–
