[xj40] No spark at spark plugs

No spark at spark plugs. (PS! The problem occurred after the
center pin in distributor cap fell off. This again caused the
inside center of the distributor cap to get burned/melt)

Spark plugs, plug leads, distributor/cap, coil are OK
Voltage to coil OK

Can problem be caused by Amplifier, ECU or/and crank shaft
sensor.
If so, what would be best to change first?

Any suggestion would be very much appreciated:)

Presumably you also have no spark from the coil HT lead to
ground too?

You do not mention the year and model of your car, but if
you are not getting any tachometer movement (say, 200 / 300
rpm) during cranking on a dead engine then your prime
suspect is the CPS.–

Put a fresh rotor in the distributor. It’s the one thing
you didn’t list, and they tend to short the spark to ground
around 90,000 miles or so. If you don’t have a new rotor at
hand, put a dollop of grease in the hole for the shaft and
try to start it. If it starts, you must replace the rotor.
I carry a new spare rotor in the glove box of both of my
XJ40s for that reason. If the car won’t start, I replace
the rotor. Even SWMBO is prepared to perform that task if
the car refuses to start for her.–

I had a 21 year old in a Lexus clip me a week or two back, clearly her fault
and her insurance Co was assuming full responsibility. I took the car to the
nearest and coincidentally highest rated shop to be examined, and left it
with them for two days. They came back and said they could not repair the
car as the parts were no longer available and asked me to take back the car
with no work having been done. The damage was limited to the outer rubber
bumper finisher, and a bumper end cap, but they did not disassemble the
bumper and there may be additional minor structural damage underneath though
it was a very minor glancing blow.

I have the car now, and the Ins. company has basically kicked it back to me
and told me to find another shop of my choosing that has the parts, which I
think is going to be a fruitless pursuit though I have a couple possible
shops I mind to try. The thing is, they can’t do what the first shop did
which is call the Jag dealer, then come up empty and give up. Can anyone
suggest a specialist who might have some of these parts in stock, or should
I just be ringing Coventry West or XK’s or any of the other Jag people in
our circle and then pushing that info onto the shop I choose?

I could do nothing and take a cash settlement and drive the car forever with
the damage but its not perfect and that is not going to work for me,
especially as it was her fault. I am also reluctant to do all the legwork,
that should be their responsibility, as the accident wasn’t my fault, but I
want the car repaired.

For cars this old it is very probable that a used part is the only op‎tion.
However I am very surprised that a reputable body shop would not easily be able to find a good used part. They just have to contact a local Auto Recyclers and if they do not have they can search nation wide.

Daniel,

I agree with Dave, your only likely source is a breaker or
someone clearing their garage - like this UK chap:-

Thanks for the advice, pretty much as I figured. I was also surprised the
shop I chose was so lazy, and I am going to try one or two more to see if I
have better luck, but I may end up having to source items from a junkyard.
Should be no shortage of XJ40s in junkyards in CA.

I would be surprised if Welsh Enterprises didn’t have both
new and used parts for the XJ40. Give them a call
800-875-5247. Jag Graveyard and a number of other vendors
have large inventories of Jaguar parts as well.–

I have been very pleased with used parts from Coventry West
out of Lithonia, Ga. Costs are very reasonable and the parts
I received looked like new. One was the side bumper on my '89.

There is another parts company out of Texas if you don’t
find what you need at Coventry.

Good luck with your search.–

Not sure where you are located but there is also Jaguar
Heaven in Stockton California who I am sure would have a
number of XJ40 parts available. Your shop is particularly
lazy in not doing a greater search for parts. Such a shop
attitude is usually a good sign to look elsewhere for shops
that cater to somewhat older vehicles.–

I like Coventy West out of Lithonia, Georgia for parts.

They are reasonable and the parts are like new. They have a
web site you can get their toll free number.

Good hunting!

Just a follow up request on my older post, I have now been through 2 shops
one of which is usually a really good shop for fixing higher end cars. I am
still having no luck in finding someone who can source the parts I need for
the repair.

If anyone is breaking a 94 XJ40 or knows of one in a junkyard that is LOCAL
to Southern California, as the insurance CO and shop are requiring the part
be available locally to inspect prior to purchase, please contact me off
list. I need the left (drivers side) rear bumper panel, and possibly a shock
absorber from underneath the bumper. I also need the entire rear rubber
finisher cap to the rear bumper. Preferably from a car that has a history of
garaging to match my 20 year indoor stored car. Yeah right.

What I am finding is essentially these cars are not repairable at this
point, if you get in an accident you are screwed. Jaguar makes apparently no
replacement body parts for XJ40s and there are few left on the open market
anywhere to be found. So, don’t get in an accident!
