XJ40 - noisy trunk lock

Hi All;

Whenever I unlock my door, I hear a nasty grinding and whirring noise
coming from the trunk lock as it gets automatically unlocked.
It just started about a week ago, and I have tried to WD-40 it a little,
but no luck. Right now, I have it disconnected
so I don’t have to hear it.

Anybody had this problem and fixed it without replacing the whole motor
thing?

thanks
Mike

I had the same problem. Fixed (read bodged) with a few bits of cardboard.
The lock is driven by a small motor (same as doors?) which drives a lump of
metal from side to side, rack-and-pinion style. Very simple, no limit
switches, the motor seems to be driven for a fixed time and just stalls
when it hits the end. After a few years the shock of hitting the end stop
chews up one or two teeth so the motor sits there jumping teeth - hence the
noise. I fixed mine by packing various parts with card to make the gears
mesh more closely, and to limit the travel so the mechanism stopped on a
good tooth. I expect it will fail again in a year or two in which case I
will look for a used spare.

Inside the lid is a black plastic assembly which carries the motor, key
lock and release button. Once you get it out you have to drill out the
plastic pegs which hold it all together, these can be replaced by self
tappers.
