[xj40] oil cooler

I had a leak on joint of one of the hoses where it joins the
engine oil cooler on my 4.0L 90 sov. I purchased new o rings
to fix. Anyway to cut along story short the nut was so
corroded to the cooler that the thread stripped. Now needing
a new cooler I tried removeing the other hose this would not
even shift. On phoning the local Jag dealer to find out the
cost of a new cooler I found out that the factory had none
in stock and had no date for the back order. I was then told
that the best option would be to do away with the cooler and
fit a bridgeing pipe to the pipe outlets under the oil
filter as fitted to later models. Jag found that the engine
did not need a cooler and only carried on fitting it to the
6.0 litre. This option would certainly be cheaper. Does
anyone have any thougths on discarding the cooler and any
information on the year the item was no longer fitted.
Thanks Chris.–

Chris,

Starting with the '93 MY, Jag introduced an oil cooler
bypass arrangment which fits in place of the oil cooler
pipes on the oil cooler adaptor block between the oil filter
head and the block to give an ‘either / or’ option.

However, there is no need to buy that bypass kit when you
junk the oil cooler. Simply remove the oil cooler adaptor
block and bolt the oil filter head directly to the block
using shorter bolts - as recommended in the Jaguar FSM.–
