[xj40] Oil leak in air cond compressor?

Hi there,
just got under of the front of my 88 3.6 and got surprised
to see that the air conditionig compressor was covered with
oil and even was a drop of oil in the stab bar.Just cleaned
the hole thing and im waiting to see where is this leak
from. Any ideas?.. My steering pump has also a leak from the
top hose but once is spoted back from the compressor, didnt
think that it was from here. Notice that wen I turn the
wheels and the steering pump is in pressure, a strange noise
comes up from the front of the engine(not from the
pump),cant localize it, but its near the air
compressor.Could all this be connected in some how?Regards.–

You would be suprised at how far oil can travel when it’s leaking!
clean it all up like you have, then keep your eye on it until you
can identify where it is coming from. Don’t assume anything. I
think you’ll find it’s power steering fluid.
You’d be suprised what strange noises can come from the belts
when they are slipping a tad. clean them up, check the tension, and
make sure any vee belts aren’t bottoming in the pulleys. might do
the trick with the power steering noise (the pump is only really
under load when you turn the steering). I once had a customer ask
me to change an xj6 pump because ‘‘the bearings are shot’’. A new
belt was a damn sight cheaper (less profit for me though :frowning: )

Thank you so much! Ill do that check and see what happens.
It really sounded as the noise came from the belts zone but
couldnt realize from where.
Very Best Regards.–

Power steering on an XJ40 is positive drive off the timing chain,
not by Vee belt. I would bet all that oil and dirt up front came
from a slow leak from the mineral oil pump that supplies pressure
to the brake booster. That’s where mine leaked from in that area.–

Hi there. This slow leak from the mineral oil pump that
supplies pressure
to the brake booster, it results from any sealing that the
pump has or it could leak down from the oil reservoir?

I tried to find out where the leak is from and from NS I could see
that the pump is really leaking from somewhere. Is it possible to
remove the pump without taking the hood out? And what usually makes
this leak? The pump gasket, or one of the two hoses connected to it?
Regards.–
