[xj40] Possdible new purchase

Greetings to all,

I am interested in a 1991 XJ40 Sovreign. It looks decent, but has a
few issues, ie the a/c doesn’t work as well as the leveling
suspension system. I understand that these are fairly common
problems with this car. If so, is there an easy fix? Or is it
major?. I do like the looks of the auto and I’ve heard that these
autos are probably the best deal out there as far as cost compared
to vehicle goes. Asking price is $4500, but I think that is high.
Suggestions or comments? Your help and response is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

It seems a pretty high price considering what you know needs fixing. Normally with self leveling system it is replaced with the standard system when it fails. Granted you can save money by doing it yourself you really need to get the seller to take the repair costs into consideration with the price. To have someone replace self leveling system is close to $1000. With the AC you don’t know whats wrong so you don’t know the cost to fix. Its very likely an R12 system unless it has already been retrofited with R134. The AC system could simply need some refrigerant or it could need some expensive parts (ie compressor, condensor, hoses etc…).
Has the car been checked out for other faults. One thing with these cars is that they can look near perfect but need a lot of expensive work, espeically if they have not been looked after mechanically. It worth the money to have a Jaguar knowledgeable mechanic evaluate the car.

I agree. Those are 2 very expensive repairs to have done. I’m not
saying you should walk away, but more negotiations are in order.
