I’m going to try and replace the pspump on my 89 xj6. Never done
anything like this before. Have the Haynes book and the shop
manuals on cd. When doing this what else do I need? The things
that don’t come when you order a replacement pump. Seals, rings,
special oil, ect. Things that only the Jag mechanic knows to order
at the same time. Looked in the archives and there do seem to be
some difference of opinions on doing it. Any help will be
appriciated

For a straight replacement of the power steering pump c/w adaptor
already fitted, the only additional things you need are an ‘O’ Ring
CAC8968-1 (HP line to pump) and some HSMO / Power steering fluid /
ATF (depending what is currently in your P/S system).
If the adaptor is not fitted to the new pump and you have to swap
yours over from the old one, you have a bit of a problem. The drive
dog on the pump shaft has to be removed to get the adaptor off and
refitted to the new pump after you have transferred the adaptor
over. Without the Jaguar ‘special tools’ for that job you have to
find a means of fitting that drive dog precisely in the correct
position on the shaft. Take an exact measurement from the end of
the shaft / the mating face of the adaptor (where it bolts to the
back of the timing cover on the engine) to the drive dog and ensure
that you reproduce that measurement exactly when you fit the drive
dog to the new pump.
Other than that, arm yourself with a variety of ’’ drive socket
extensions to gain access to the adaptor attachment bolts - hidden
away nicely under the exhaust manifold and a PITA to get at and
undo! :-)–
