[xj40] QUESTION ON HOW TO TELL IF DOOR HANDLES COMPLETELY BROKEN?

I’ve had a bad front left driver’s door handle on an '89 XJ6 VDP
for sometime, and one day last week I could no longer open it by
doing ‘‘the bump’’. I opened up the door panel, and the back piece
fell down (I think it was already broken, but hadn’t fallen down
yet). I’ve exhausted the forum, and read about all the fixes,
including the XJ40 book, but many times they say that a broken
pivot pin is what breaks, and these fixes apply to that. Do they
mean by the pivot pin, the little bar upi inside the handle? or do
they mean that back piece, which attachs to the rod that has to pop
up to open the door? Also, does anyone understand how that ‘‘bump’’
on the door made it open? I think maybe one too many bumps and
holding the handle up, and the backpiece just broke off. I think I
found one forum posting where someone glued this backpiece back on,
but I don’t see how the handle would work, even if that glue
actually held. I assume the quickfix to the handle allows the
handle to actually open up properly, and addresses a broken pivot
pin…but I think my problem may fall under ‘‘the handle is actually
broken’’, as it looks like the black piece (with a spring) which is
attached to the piece that holds the rod has broken right off. I
can actaully see a hole in the black surface of the outdoor handle,
if I lift the handle and look underneath. Is there any fix for
this? I’ve exhausted Ebay and elsewhere and lowest I can find is
$215 for new handle, and I think I’d pay more for the heated (is
there an actual heater?, or has it just been heated to
reinforce?)…also, how hard is it to get the tumbler out of your
old handle to keep same lock? I think I’d just order with new keys,
and use one key for doors and one for ignition…thanks to anyone
that reads this lengthy post and offers advice!–

David,
i have not had the door handle problem (yet) but I seem to remember
reading a post where someone found some very reasonably priced
replacement handles (e-bay maybe?)…this is a VERY common problem
among the earlier 40’s so I am sure there are tons of archived
posts on the subject…i’m sorry I can’t be of more help than that
but perhaps this is enough to start you on a different approach to
a search of the archives…–

Dave,
The handles can break in 2 places. The most common is the white
meatal that holds the pivot pin. The handle itself can also
break. I have had both handle breaks. The pivot pin holder break
is an easy fix and is shown with photos in the archives. It is
repaired by fabricating a metal L shaped holder for the pivot pin
and attaching it to the pot metal. The handle itself it more
difficult but can be done.–

Dave:
I sounds like your handle is ‘really’ broken, if the pivot
plate has broken off. I don’t know how you will fix that. I have
a dimilar broken handle that I’ve played with from time to time
looking for a fix. The rivet that holds the lever arm on to the
back of the handle failed. Trouble is, the rivets aren’t centered
in the boss, which makes drilling it out problematic. I was going
to drill and tap the boss to accept a screw, but I’ll need and end
mill to put the hole in the correct place.
Tumblers are easy, however. Remove the snap ring holding the
assembly in, and it literally falls out. Pay close attention so
you can put everything back in the proper order. And, if your car
is like mine, there’s a small return spring that is broken. You
can live without it, though.–
