[xj40] quick steering

After aligning the new (rebuilt) steering rack on my 93 XJ6:

Driving straight, or with a slight right or left turn (freeway
driving) the steering feels very quick, like the valving used to
detect the turn is set so low that it responds with only a slight
amount of turn of the steering wheel. When I turn to the left
(more than 50 degrees of the steering wheel, but less than 80
degrees) it seems like the rack wants to move by itself (very
little pressure required to turn the steering wheel.

Turning to the right, by about the same amount (more than 50
degrees of the steering wheel, but less than 80 degrees), the wheel
seems to jump back and forth a bit. Never had this problem before
I replaced the rack. When I turn to the left or right (more than 80
degrees of the steering wheel, but less than half a turn) the
steering wheel seems to jump back and forth a bit.

Any thoughts? I’ve checked the fluid, and it is not low. Replaced
the wheel bearings and tierod ends too–

Have you checked the wheel alignment three times???. If
the front wheels are pointing outwards the steering will
want to wander off-line. If they are pointing inwards you
will get a self-centering effect.

I’ve had the alignment done, but a lot of teh specs are at teh max
on the right side. The alignment person did only a toe on adj.

Before the rack was replaced I had only a pull to teh left
prpblem. I can live with the very slight pull. what is roubling
me is that the amount of force I need to turn the wheels is too
light. I could turn it with my pinky finger… my 8 year old can
turn it with his pinky finger. it is like the opposite of loosing
your PS pump. The steering wheel is too easy to turn–
