[xj40] Radio/speakers troubleshooting

88 xj40 with AM/FM/CB/tape

All speakers on the right side of the car work. The woofers
under the rear seat are trying to work (they need
replacement). But speakers on left side of car are dead.

I opened up the left rear door to replace the broken door
handle, and took a look at the speaker while I was in there.
The speaker is shot. Open circuit. Replaced it with similar
sized Alpine unit, which is known good, but still no sound
from it.

Haven’t done anything to the front left speaker yet.

Any idea why they are dead? Any recommendations for radio
troubleshooting?

Thanks

i have to ask the obvious but you did not say in your post if you
made sure the ‘fade’ and ‘balance’ controls of the radio are set to
allow sound from all 4 door speakers?–

Good point.

My radio has only a front/rear fade control. No left/right
balance control that I can find.

The front/rear fade control works. But no sound coming from
the left (driver’s side) door speakers.–

one way to check the wires is to use an ohm meter and check the
continuity of the wires…check both ends of both speaker wires to
insure you have continuity thoroughout the wire…you can make
a ‘jumper’ wire to attach to the speaker wire end that connects to
the back of the radio so that you can position the ohm meter close
to the end of the wire that is at the door speaker…if you do have
continuity in all wires I would check the ground connection to be
sure it is clean and making good contact…i understand the earlier
MY xj40 radios used a common ground for all door speakers, but I
may be wrong on that…if you don’t have continuity in a wire then
you likely have located your problem…–

the left/right control, IIRC, is activated by pulling the volume
knob out slightly, and then turning left or right …–

Thank You!!!

You are absolutely right! The whole time I’ve had a balance
control right in front of me, and never noticed it. It was
maxed out for the right side for the last year.

There was one bad speaker in the rear, which I replaced. Now
all is working well.

This forum is great! You’ve saved me hours of needless
troubleshooting.

Thanks again,

the outcome…

I replaced the 4" woofers under the front edge of the rear seat cushion
on my 89 (I believe the 90 & later models have 5-1/4" woofers) with
GW-2048 from All Electronics. They give as good sound, or possibly
better, than the originals which my then-teenage son blew out. These
are $7.50 each:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/GW-2048/search/4"#34;_40W_SHIELDED_WOOFER,8_OHM.html

Only slight problem is that these are a bit longer front-to-back than
the originals, or have a bigger magnet, and you have to use something
as a spacer to move them forward ~ .2" so the back of the magnet is not
jammed against the rear of the cavity. I just glued a circle of cord
or very small rope around the mounting holes to provide the proper
spacing.

I replaced the woofers under the rear seat with some generic
4’’ speakers from Advance Auto Parts. About $10 each. The
frames are very slightly wider than the plastic housing,
although you can force them in (which is what I did), it
would be better to file or grind off a small amount of metal
from the edge of the frame.

Before going to Advanced, I checked Radio Shack. Apparently
Radio Shack no longer sells individual speakers.–
