[xj40] really disapointed with underhood paint finish

OK, my dad’s 1994 XJ12 had a power steering leak from one of
the hoses connecting under the reservior on the passenger’s
side inner fender. So there was all of this oily residue
from that all over there so today I had a can of spray carb
cleaner. I decided I would just spray this stuff down real
quick with this spray carb cleaner to get the worst of the
oil crap off of there. As I was doing this on the inner
fender suddenly the paint just wrinkled up and peeled away
from the BARE metal of the inner fender. It looks like there
was NO primer or other precoat on the inner fender metal
other than one VERY thin sinngle coat of paint on this
panel. Has anyone else ever had something like this happen
to any of the body color panels under the hood?–

I would say the carb cleaner worked as advertised. Very nasty
stuff. You may want to read the label on these products before you
use them in the future.–

Appearently you are not getting the main point of my
message. The ‘‘paint’’ on the inner fender wells seems to be
very poorly applied with the result that there is VERY poor
adhesion and what seems to be a simple one coat of color
applied. I asked if anyone else has noticed this. I have
used carb cleaner under the hood of MANY other cars with no
effect like I got on this original 1994 XJ12.–

I got your point.
My expereince has also been that the paint in the boot, interior,
and some areas under the hood may not have the same clear coat
finish as the exterior. It appears to be dull. Perhaps no clear is
applied and all there is is primer and base. I would imagine your
Dad’s car is similar.
That said, most of these cleaners have Xylene and Acetone in them.
These components will remove paint. Were these ingredients present
in the brand that you used?–

Yeah, I’ve seen it. Major defect in chemical resistance, that can be cured
with a can of spray paint of approximately the right color.

They don’t build 'em like they used to!
