[xj40] replacing motor mounts

Greetings fellow Zag-U-Wire enthusiasts…

Can anyone give me some first hand feedback on changing
out the motor mounts on my '89. What I’m concerned about
is access to the top nut on each side. Do I have to use a
hoist to lift the engine or will a block under the oil pan
accomplish the same thing?

The car has about 150K miles and I’ve never changed the
mounts. I’m also going to rebuild the transmission mount
(again) while I’m at it. Hopefully this will help to
eliminate the annoying clunk I’m experiencing going back
and forth from park to drive.–

Dennis,

Can’t speak from first-hand experience but according to the
good book it says in summary:-

  • Remove air cleaner box

  • Remove the mount to bracket top nut

  • Take the weight of the engine on a jack (ensuring that the
radiator fan does not foul the cowl)

  • Remove the engine mounting bracket-to-crossmember securing
    bolts

  • Remove the mounting bracket assembly from the vehicle

  • Change the spacer and bracket over to the new mount

  • Refit the mounting/bracket to the crossmember

  • Lower the engine on to the mount

  • Refit the top securing nut

  • Pour yourself a stiff drink! :-)–

When I installed my engine recently, I had no problems
getting to the bolts on the engine mounts. They’re fairly
easy to access compared to many things on our cars. And
yes, a block of wood under the transmission will accomplish
the same thing as a lift.–

Thanks Bryan and Brett…

Just so I don’t run into any surprises:

  1. After I undo the top nut on each side I then jack up the
    engine.

  2. I then unbolt the plate that the bottom nut is bolted to
(because there is no access to the bottom bolt) and slide
the mount and plate down and out.

Is that about it ?–

Dennis,

Yup - that’s the way I read it.–

Thanks Bryan…

I’ll have a go at it this weekend.

Speaking of this weekend would you please give a ‘‘Penny for
the Guy’’ for me.–

Dennis,

Thanks, I sure will - but with the recent drop in the value
of the pound Sterling, instead of a penny this year it may
have to be three farthings!

That is not our only problem though. We are having
difficulty deciding on an effigy to place on top of the
bonfire before we light it. There are a number of suitable
candidates both over there and on this side of the Atlantic
but I will refrain from soliciting suggestions for fear of
us being banned from the forum!

BTW, before attempting that job this weekend, squirt a
little Kroil penetrating oil on the relevant nuts and bolts
and leave it overnight.–

Dennis,
How did you succeed in this project?

Otto …

Yes everything went fine with replacing both motor mounts with engine in place.

Ok, Dennis, that’s good. Did you follow Bryan’s instructions?
