[xj40] reverse inhibit relay wiring

I have a 1993 XJ6 (XJ40) that when I got it the reverse inhibit
relay (positioned by the main relay on the LHD side with the green
base) had the wires loose. I have wiring diagrams for the ABS
system but they don’t show the reverse inhibit relay on them.
Could anyone tell me the color scheme for this relay so I can hook
it back up correctly and also if any other connetors attach to any
of the wires? (found a connector laying inside the compartment
also)

Thanks

George,

Do you mean the ‘reverse inhibit’ relay associated with the passive
restraint system (i.e. the ‘attack belts’)?

I thought they were no longer fitted to '93 / '94 XJ40s? Certainly
I can’t find any reference to them in the wiring diagrams for
the '93 / '94 cars.

Another puzzle is your reference to the location of that relay. I
thought it was affixed to the left blower case.

When you refer to that relay being ‘positioned by the main relay
with a green base’, do you mean next to the EMS Main Relay on the
firewall in the engine bay? If so, that relay (in the green base)
is supposed to be the A/C clutch relay.

Please clarify.

Meanwhile, here are the wiring connections for the ‘attack belt’
reverse inhibit relay in earlier cars:-

pin #30 Green wire (from passive restraint ECU)
pin #87a Green wire
pin #85 Slate/light green wire
pin #86 White/pink wire (from Ignition ‘ON’ relay)
OR White/black wire (from fuse #9 centre box) depending upon MY.–

Bryan,

I just know that from the JHM1154 CD Anti Lock brake system parts
list (G17 fiche3) Item number 2 part number KBC 2483 it lists it as
a Reverse Inhibit Relay-green. The main realy seat is white and
the pump relay is yellow and they seem to be ok as far as their
wiring. It could very well be mislabled on the parts list. That
could also be a good reason I can’t find it on the wiring diagrams
myself. If it is the AC clutch relay that would explain why I can’t
find it.

Bryan,

Oops, that’s part number DBC 2483 not KBC

George,

That illustration to which you refer in the parts catalogue (in
JHM1153 too) makes NO sense at all! There is not a ‘reverse inhibit
relay’ associated with the ABS system .

Simple question - does your car have ‘attack’ (passive restraint)
seat belts fitted?

Is the relay you have found attached to the left blower housing?
All the information I have shows that there are only two ABS relays
in that position - the ABS Main relay (White in a black base) and
the ABS Pump relay (Yellow in a yellow base).

The A/C clutch relay is up in the engine bay on the firewall - one
of a group of six in that location.–

Bryan,

At least I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that can’t
make sense of that page !!!

I’m not sure if my car is fitted with passave restraint system
or not. I will check that when I get home this evening. Since I
am in the US and figure the car was sold here I would guess that it
does have. The location of the connector for the relay is in a
cluster of 3 on the firewall on the passengers side. I know the
other 2 are the main relay and the ABS pump relay.

Bryan,

I found in another book that the relay is the AC clutch relay. I
should be able to find that on my wiring diagram. Thanks for
helping me research this out. I am having problems with my brake
pump not working and thought that this might be a simple answer. I
will now go through what I know to be the brake system and track
the problem down.
