[xj40] Reverse lights/rotary switch?

Seem to have a rotary switch problem FF69 flagged but rotary switch
is spotless inside, when adjusted no change, still stays in limp
mode. Can’t get reverse lights to come on no matter where switch is
moved. Bulbs are good, lol. This was an intermittant problem at
first and lights did work when shifted into R, now constantly in
limp mode, no change when rotary switch is adjusted. Found a new
rotary switch but it’s for MY VN up to 629XXX mine is 631xxx do you
think it makes a difference? If not I will buy it as it is OEM
brand new and at a great price.

Thanks,
Charlie

PS: Shifter cable is good, moves smoothly and is securely attached
at side of trans.–

Charlie,

Although I’ve no indication of what the difference is, the
parts catalogue does not show the rotary switch for the
'90 model (VIN594576 to 629285) to be interchangeable with
the switch for the '91 and '92 models (VIN 629286 to 667828).

The part number for the '90 car is DBC5858 superseded by
DBC6610 but both are now ‘NLA’ from Jaguar.

The part number for the '91-'92 cars is DBC6133 which is
still available from JDHT at the princely(!) sum of 228 GBP
(about $360 USD).

Have you got continuity between the switch on the
Slate/light green wire to the 24-way Yellow connector pin 8
under the ski-slope?–

The rotary switch I found is new in the package from jag, mod #6610,
I know mine is the #6133, but can’t seem to see what would be so
different as it should just indicate the shifter position to the
TCU?

Have not checked for continuity on that wire, what is the function
of that particular wire?

Does the rotary switch turn on the reverse lights? Can’t get them
to come on no matter where the rotary switch is adjusted to.

Charlie,

That Slate/light green wire grounds one side of the relay
coil in the rear BFMs using ignition switched power to
energise the relay to switch on the reversing lights.
If you have passive (attack) seat belts it immobilises(?)
those too.

As I said, I haven’t a clue why those two rotary switches
are not interchangeable - only the parts catalogue reference
which shows them not to be, and that is usually reliable.
The wiring diagrams also show the connectors and wiring to
be the same, so unless they are inaccurate there must be
some mechanical reason why they are not interchangeable.–

Bryan,
My attack belts are functioning, but no reverse lights. I can’t see
a difference between the switches either, it’s not as if the switch
is some kind of computer, so it seems as though it should function.
Might be worth purchasing the switch just to see, could always
resell it and bite the bullet for the 6133 if needed.
I think a new switch is the answer to this problem.
It is the last of my CELs and once that limp mode is gone the trans
shifts perfectly.
I really want to drive this cat trouble free for a little while. At
least all of the other CELs have not returned after I repaired
them.LOL

Charlie,

GOT IT!!!

Despite what my circuit diagrams show, the connector on the
rotary switch changed from the 24-way PMHD on the '90 MY to
a 15-way PMHD on the '91 / '92 MY cars.

I gleaned that information from a ‘‘1991 Model Year
Preliminary Information’’ document furnished to dealers ahead
of the launch of the '91 models.

That’s why the transmission rotary switches are not directly
interchangeable between the '90 and '91 models.–

Thanks Bryan, too bad about that, the 6610 I found was OEM new, oh
well. Guess I’ll fiddle around with the adjustment some more and if
that doesn’t work I’ll go for the 6133.
What’s all the scary talk about moving this thing? I’ve moved mine
and found no real problems, how can I get the alignment tool, I’ve
found one on a tool site but they want $172USD?!!
Seems very steep for such a simple device, anyone know of one for
sale out there? If I do get one I’ll tool up some of my own at a
machine shop and sell them cheap!
Also if anyone’s got a known working rotary switch please contact
me.

Thanks,
Charlie–

Here’s an update:
The limp mode mysteriously ‘‘went away’’ last week, car ran great for
about three days then while idling at a light …clunk ! into limp
mode we go. CEL flagged 69. Pulled center console fuse, cleared
code, limp mode gone, but not for long. CEL 44 and 69, 69 due to
being in limp mode, not any other reason, 44 is my o2 sensor,
removed it, very black. Probably due to all that time driving with
a bad CTS and so much driving in limp mode. Going to get a new o2
sensor and will see what happens after a warm up.Problem arises
once temp rises then idles rough and wants to stall then throws the
44, can clear it but still runs bad once hot.( VERY RICH ) May need
a thermostat just to be sure that temp is coming up properly, seems
to take a little longer to come up to temp lately. I’m getting
there, slowly. Just want to thank all who gave advice and all those
posts in the archive, they really help point one in the right
direction.

Charlie

I’ll update once new o2 sensor and thermostat have been installed.–

Update to the update:

Installed new Bosch direct fit O2 sensor, codes gone, no limp mode
runs smooth at all temps, rich condition gone. I believe I can now
enjoy driving my cat and concentrate on cosmetic items and A/C
repair/refit.
Thanks for the tips given I’m sure there is more to do but for now
I’m pretty happy.Sleepycat is starting to wake up.
