[xj40] Riddle me this

In reply to a message from HardinRA sent Thu 10 May 2007:

Dear Sir
The only true way to determine the condition of the engine oil pump
pressure system is to connect a mechaical calibrated gauge, time
consuming, having done a bit of research I have found if replacing
with the early sender unit pt C46272 the internal resistance is 25
ohms lower at ‘‘o’’ pressure than the later unit this would make the
oil pressure reading slightly higher, also there is a Smiths
tranducer Pt No. PTR1801-10 specifically for a Jaguar application
but does not state which model, from my research, the technical
spec. for the the later unit reads 310 ohms at zero and 97 ohms @ 8
bar, fitting the early unit which is available from North East
British parts would read estimated 5 PSI higher on the gauge, to me
this would be acceptable as you would then see a true drop in
pressure if it occurs, also the later ‘‘idiot’’ lead is designed to
read approx 4.5 bar as the inline resistor is 150 Ohms the
pressure switch on this lead operates at 2-6 PSI.
The other message posted about changing the oil is advised and
should be the first job to be done.

Hope this helps?
