[xj40] SLS and HSMO and Brakes. in no particular order!

I know that the HSMO fluid is used for the SLS which I presume my
3.6 1989 has since the reserviour is still there. The power to the
brakes went so I took a look at the HSMO reserviour and the inner
cap thing had come off and it was empty. So I replaced the
reserviour and added Castrol HSMO Jaguar fluid (2.50 a bottle!)
until the sight glass showed green. Thats all fine but would the
system need bleeding? and there is a new squeek coming from the
rear left suspension (im guessing), is there an easy solution or
will it need the good old convertion? There was nothing there
before but there was however a knocking coming from the rear right
shock.

Thanks for any help,

Having an HSMO reservoir on an '89 car does not necessarily
mean that you have the SLS still fitted. Look in your Haynes
manual, chapter 10, illustration 10.10b. Is your Girling
valve blanked off as shown there?

If instead you have a hydraulic line running from that
connection to the back of the car which divides above the
left rear axle with a line going to the top of each
spring/shock unit then you still have SLS units fitted.

At that junction of the hydraulic lines is a bleed nipple -
see Haynes chapter 10, illustration 10.2a and 10.2b

To bleed the SLS system, jack the rear of the car with axle
stands under the lower control arms (wishbones). If you do
not have a lift, remove the rear wheels for easier access.
Disconnect the ride height sensor arm at the right side
lower wishbone, run the engine and manually raise the ride
height sensor arm about one inch - the rear of the vehicle
will rise. Switch off the engine when ‘pulsing’ is felt in
the system. Open the bleed nipple and bleed the system until
the suspension lowers fully, then close it. Top up the HSMO
reservoir.
Start the engine and repeat the bleeding operation and again
top up the reservoir on completion.
Start the engine once more and raise the rear of the vehicle
by manually moving the ride height sensor link. When
‘pulsing’ is felt, reconnect the sensor link to the lower
wishbone. The vehicle will return to its normal ride height.

Top up the reservoir once more and you’re done.–

Thanks for that, Do you reckon that would cure the knocking and
squeeking?
