[xj40] Smoking exhaust

Hi All,

I’ve replaced the head gasket on my 93 Sovereign 4.0 and in
starting up its blowing white smoke like its going out of
fashion. I can see no indications of the head gasket not
being OK, there is no oil in water or water in oil. The
engine is running beautifully and is smooth at all revs.
There is no hesitation in its power and everything feels
fine. The coolant level is stable as and no gauges are
registering anything wrong. As far as I can see its been a
perfectly successful operation, except that its still
billowing smoke. I was thinking that perhaps there is just
a lot of coolant still sitting in the exhaust/muffler/cat
from when it blew, but being that its such a beautiful piece
of machinery I’m moderately nervous about doing damage to
it. Does anyone have any thoughts on this - what I should
look at/check/test etc?

Thanks in advance for the help!

How long have you run the motor for?
It may need a good couple of minutes to clear if you had a lot of fluids
get into the exhaust system.
I did the gasket s on a V6 mitsi Pajero afew years ago and that spued steam
for a long time after heating up.

Thanks for the reply Robin,

Its run for about a half hour and hasn’t shown much sign of
easing. Its running at a good temp, and thats not
fluctuating at all, but I’d have expected it to clear after
5 - 10 minutes?

Cheers,

Last year I’ve replaced head gasket on my friend xj40. The
engine was also in pretty bad condition and was topped up
with to much oil before he bought it and oil looked like
mud. It was smoking white/dark-cold/hot after head
gasket/seals replacement for over a week and we started to
look for new engine. After a week or approx 300 miles it
started to work good and less smoke with every use. After a
month it was working like any other perfect jag. I think we
replaced the oil three times in that month.
When I replaced head gasket on my own xj40 it stopped
smoking completely after 50 miles or so.–

Thanks for the reply, from what I’m hearing around the traps
the 50 miles you mention seems fairly typical so I think
I’ll just give it a bit more of a run and see how I go. I
took the rocker cover off and checked all the torques,
checked the plugs, did another compression test and
everything seems fine. The oil and look of the head below
the rocker was excellent, the oil looks great and there are
just no other signs of any issue so I’ll give it a better go.

Cheers,

Stu. Did you do an oil change after doing the head? if not their
are some fluid particals in the oil and they are burning off.
Second thought, evan if you did an oil change it may take more than
half an hour to burn any coolant left in the sump or galleries. John–

Thanks for the reply John,

I’ve completed about 60 kms all up in it now, smoke has
stopped and she’s running like a charm. Looks like I was
just a bit too nervous on it really. Everything is still
looking great so I’ll get in some good running this weekend
and we should be away laughing.

Kind regards,
