[xj40] Starter

Is there any way you can tell whether or not you have a
lucas or bosch starter by looking at the vin number. I have
an 88 vdp and figure it would be easier to look at the vin
instead of getting under the car and digging around. thanks–

I just replaced my starter. I have read and heard that you have to
drop the transmission a little or remove the intake manifold to get
to the top bolt (mounted on the opposite side of the bell housing).
NOT TRUE!!!

Sears sells a 13mm wrench with a ratchet on the box end. You can
also set the head to any angle from 5 - 45 degrees. I was able to
push the foam back from the bell housing and find the bolt. I put
the wrench on with a breaker bar (pipe) over the top and voila!

The whole job took less than 2 hours.

I thought this might help. If anyone wants a picture of the wrench,
email me.

GOOD LUCK–

Justin,

I’m pleased for you - you were lucky!

The top bolt on your car was obviously not as tight / seized
as the one on my car. I tried an angled ratchet wrench but
had to give up when I thought it was about to shear the
pivot pin.

Ultimately, they had to use a bolt extractor (like a socket
with internal claws to bite in to the head) before they were
able to apply enough torque to ‘crack’ the bolt on mine. Of
course, they needed to lower the tranny and disconnect the
exhaust to get enough clearance to access the bolt from
below to use that tool.–

SnapOn make a wrench that will come down from above to the top bolt,
called a ratcheting box wrench with T handle, as in RTBM12. Or you
could holiday in the Bahamas instead
