[xj40] Steering rack suitability

After discovering the reason for my heavy feeling steering
on my '92 4.0 Sovereign compared to my '93 cars it would
appear that Jaguar increased the piston size in the steering
rack for the '93/'94 cars to make low speed maneuvers easier .

My question is does anybody know if these '93/'94 racks will
fit on my '92 my as if they are identical I would very much
like to fit one.
I know there’s a plethora of jag part numbers on the jdht
site which isn’t really of much use as they don’t have any ,
but when you look at refurbishers sites they just seem to
lump all xj40’s [4.0 L’s] together as if it’s not that
important ,

I have had a rack from a 94 in my Green 88 for a couple of years,
now. In fact, the rebuild kit from Welsh ($49.95) fits all years,
as far as I know.
The only difference I’m aware of is in the srm attached to the
front hub carriers which will require resetting the toe in.–

Yep, as noted, the units will swap back and forth.

When the pump on my '91 started leaking about the same time
as the rack on my '93 I put the '93’s pump on the '91, the
'91’s rack on the '93 and a rebuilt rack into the '91 and
then rebuilt the '91’s pump for the '93.

The cross bolt for the steering shaft clap will help keep
the wheel centered so as noted, all you’ll need is the
correct toe dialed in.–

Well that’s certainly the impression that I got from doing a
bit of homework , normally it wouldn’t bother me but i’m
shortly to undergo surgery on one of my shoulder joints and
most of my journeys are in town so I could use a little help .

Pete I didn’t quite understand your abbreviation [ srm? ] do
you mean that the only difference will be the normal
adjustment to get the toe in right ?

I was also expecting that maybe the hydraulic pipes might
have not been in the right position , did you find they
hooked up alright ?

Thanks also to you Win , I love this mix and match aspect of
these cars ,

So i’m off to find a late steering rack , thanks guys ,

Sorry about the type. I washed my hands that day and couldn’t do a
thing with 'em. I meant ‘arm’ as in the arm the tie rod bolts to.
The racks stay the same, but the slightly longer arm increases the
leverage to make steering easier. You will end up with a bit too
much toe-in when you mount a 94 rack in an earlier car. But that’s
easily adjusted.
The hydraulic fittings are in exactly the same locations. I found
that the hexes are 9/16 and 5/8 inch instead of metric. You’ll need
to remove the return hose to get good access to the supply hose,
and the threaded hose fittings are different lengths to allow that.
I have access to a local DIY salvage yard. Power steering racks
are $25.19 with a $5.00 core charge (makes it an ever $32 with
taxes).–

Thanks Pete I thought as much , by the way did you have any
problem coupling it up ? as you can see in my signature i’ve
two '93 cars as well and the lower steering columns are a
bit different in appearance to the '92 .

Incidentally how did you discover that it would fit ? was it
just out of necessity ?

Even in ’s that’s cheap for a rack , for some reason they
are very expensive if you go for a professionally
refurbished one , secondhand are quite a bit cheaper but of
course quality can be dubious and our annual ministry of
transport test is a real toughie on these items ,

Infinite curiousity and cheap parts nearby, I guess. I’ve always
have been prone to taking something apart just to see how it’s put
together. And being semi-retired, I have time to play. It costs a
dollar to get in the salvage yard. What more could I want?
I will tell you that the steering rack for a 94 V12 XJ40 has
different mounts. But the same low price at the salvage yard.
Come to think of it, I combined two racks (one from an 88, one from
a 94) to make one good one and installed it in my 94. I had the
pinion out and didn’t pay attention to where the cut-out for the
pinch bolt should be and the steering wheel is 150 degrees or so
out. I’ll wither have to disarm the air bag and recenter the
wheel, or take the pinion back out and put it in correctly. Maybe
after the rains stop… We’ve had just 10 clear days in the last
77.
If you decide to put new seals in your rack, loosen the inner tie
rod nuts with the rack in still in the car. They’re on pretty
tight. Heat can’t be used because it will melt the nylon bits in
the ball joint at the end of the rack.–

Somewhere about 1993 Jaguar changed from Adwest racks to ZF
racks for better reliability. At a certain point after that
they began to only supply ZF racks for replacements. Not sure
if there is any difference in the fitting threads however. If
you can use a ZF you will get longer trouble free service in
my opinion. I even fitted an XJS ZF rack when I did a
steering conversion on my 1965 3.8S but my 1990 XJ6 is still
running its Adwest with no problems at 60K miles.–

In reply to a message from John Quilter sent Thu 18 Jun 2009:

Yes John , that’s also when jaguar revised the camshafts for
quieter running , redesigned the front spoiler and air
intake , added the twin cooling fans and recalibrated the
gearbox adding the first gear inhibit facility .

Reading my Nigel Thorley book he also says jaguar increased
the power steering piston to provide more assistance and
reduced effort at parking speeds .

Which is why I just got to have one !

Cheers Derek…–

By way of an update , I’ve now got fitted a '94 ZF steering
rack to my '92 sovereign [ thanks to you guys Pete,Win,John
] I had to let my half tame mechanic do it , my shoulder
wouldn’t allow me to have a go at it , and as predicted it
was a straight swop over .

I took the opportunity to fit a pair of new track rod ends ,
dispensed with the green mineral oil and had it refilled
with regular ATF.

Although the difference in effort at low speeds is
noticeable I wouldn’t say it was startling , but seeing as
how I do a lot of in town driving any improvement i’d say
was worth the changeover,
