[xj40] Stiffening of moulded carpets

Howdy all:

The moulded carpet in the trunk is failing. Specifically, the upper
vertical section of the side walls are falling down. The PO took out the
support points that support the carpets.

I can put new supporting members to hold the carpet up, but the carpet has
sorta lost its shape now.

Has anyone tried coating the backls of these carpets with something to
stiffen them back up again? i was thinking about using fiberglas resin
… not sure if that would work.

ANy ideas?

Also, is it proper that the carpet on the sides doesn’t go all the way up
to the top…or have mine shrunk or someting?

Thanks

Darren

Darren,
Use “Gorilla Glue” to stiffen the carpet and gluing the carpet. Works like a
charm. For stiffening be sure to use sparingly and keep an eye on it as it
foams (wipe smooth every once in awhile with a tongue depressor or similar);
this will give you a flat surface to work with. I think you will find this
stuff will hold the carpet in place as well. Highly Recommended!
(No affiliation with Gorilla Glue Co.; but it sure works on alot of
applications.)

Good Luck,
Mike Warne

In reply to a message from mwarne sent Mon 27 Jan 2003:

What about 3-M spray adhesive? (I’ve heard it’s great on
headliners).

My carpet is doing similar, but the PO had pulled it away from
the front left corner to gain access to the filler lid release
button. Tore the paper supports in the corner in the process.
(UGGGHHHH). Worse, the carpeting has now stiffened into that
shape … so I guess my question is how to limber it back up so I
can fit it back into the corner somehow. Someone suggested in a
post many months ago about using one of those new hand steamers,
that looks like a hand vac. Anyone actually tried this?–
