[xj40] Stuck in park-help!

I am sorry I neglected her for so long. My 88 XJ6 has been
sitting in my garage for several months. I had kept the
battery up so I wasn’t surprised that she started right up.
After a proper warm up I attempted to move the shifter from
park to reverse but nyet!! The lever would move a
little-kind of rubbery-but not out of park! I gently wiggled
it abot 100 times to no avail. I didn’t want to apply a lot
of force & make a bad thing VERY bad so here I am. Help!

There is a relay that will deactivate the lock on the gear
selector when you push the brake. Tap the brakes while
holding your hand on the gear knob, you will hopefully feel
and faintly hear a klick noise from the solenoid. It
sometimes gets stuck. If you don’t hear that look at the
fuses then check the relay under the pasanger side dash it
is labeled ‘‘transmission’’.
The conection between the gear lever and transmission is an
actual flexible steel cable much like that on a bicycle. If
that does not do it you need to take the console down and
look in the gear change assembly to see why it is stuck it
might be mechanical. Do not force the gear you will break
the housing. I bought a 93 Jag that has a simmilar gear and
some @#$% broke it attempting to put it in neutral when the
battery was dead. The newer models have a small hole covered
by a starr shaped plug you can take out and with a pencil
can disengage the locking mechanism. The 88 (I have one)
does not have that ‘‘manual’’ override.
Another way to see if the transmission is not stuck is to
get under the car disengage the cable from the transmission
and move the lever on the side of the transmission by hand,
if it works that means that the transmission is OK and the
problem is with the lever mechanism inside the car. If it
does not something seized the transmission from inside for
whatever reasons.
I have driven my car around the block for testing purposes
with the selector mechanism completely removed and putting
the car in gear by pulling on the cable itself. You cannot
really figure what forward gears are selected but the others
you will be able to tell. For testing that would be
sufficient. Make sure you do all this observing all safety
precautions.–

Hi Jimmie,

More than likely, the shift cable that connects the J-shifter to the transmission lever on the left side of the transmission case has failed, where the inner cable is binding on the outer sheath.

If you disconnect the cable where it attaches to the transmission lever under the vehicle on the left side of the transmission case (with the motor OFF so that you don’t accidentally engage a gear) and then check to see that you can mover the lever manually, you will probably find that the cable is stuck.

That happened to mine several years ago, and it would NOT shift in very cold temperatures until the motor warmed the transmission housing and cable sufficiently to allow the cable to move, and it got progressively worse to where it took 20 minutes or more to loosen enough to move out of park. Cable replacement is relatively easy, but the cable is not cheap.

Check your brake lights!

If the footwell switch under the pedal has siezed then
the car won’t know you have pressed the brake and won’t
un-latch your shifter.
