[xj40] Suggestion Needed for XJ12 workshop manual

Dear list:

Just got my '94 xj12. Can anyone suggest with some workshop manual for this
car?

I read the Kirby’s “Experience in the car”, and with the suggestion from
the book as well as the list, I feel the urge to check my distributor.
However, just do not know how to start. I do not have any experience
before.

If I’m to order from JDHT, which one I should order? is it the JMH1145
(Jaguar X300 XJ6 and XJ12 1994-95)? My car has the body of XJ40.

Please give me suggestion. Thanks a lot.

Can I add to that a request for a parts list? - many of the parts
are interchangeable with the XJ40/XJS but it’s hard to know which
are and which aren’t.

I have some PDF files I bought on the internet that don’t seem to
be copyrighted, Haynes XJ40 book, Kirby’s XJS book, the XJ40 on
line book and the archives of this list of course.

To check the distributor do the following.
1/ Remove the cover in the center of the V by turning the 4 screws.
2/ Remove the distributor cap - check the plug wires are labelled
and remove them from cap, loosen 3 screws
3/ Remove the rotor - 2 allen screws
4/ Replace with a new rotor (about $25) or refit the old one. Do
the silicone fix to close out the gaps in the rotor.
5/ Replace cap with a new one (about $60+) or clean and refit the
old - I just refitted the old as it looked better than the new one!
If a new one make sure it has the brass bush around the center
electrode and stretch out the spring as described in the XJS book.
6/ Reattach plug wires, replace the V cover and your done.

You should condider replacing the spark plugs. From what I
understand, if theres too much resistance to the spark anywhere in
the system, it’ll burn out the rotor. It’s a pain to replace all 12
plugs so it may not have been done recently. At $1.50 x 12 it’s
better to plan on just replacing them all - NGK BR6EF I think. Also
plan on replacing the wires ($50-100).–

You have a Marelli distributor.

It doesn’t have the advance seizing problem.

The JDHT CD you have identified should be the correct one.

You’re right to keep a close eye on the Marelli distributor, when
this malfunctions it can cause a loss of spark to one bank of the V-
12, which then dumps unburnt fuel/air mixture into the exhaust
system and can cause catalyst destruction and fire. Mike
Strickland’s post from yesterday contained good information on this
issue.

Hi Dave

Do you (or anyone else) have a copy of this CD by any chance?
There’s something not right about the model years for JHM1145.

There are 2 recent US XJ12 models, the 93-94 XJ40 and the 95-96
X300. 94-95 would cover both XJ40 and X300 and would leave out the
93 and 96. This led me to think it really applied to the 95-96 X300
cars which may have been called 94-95 in the UK using their build
date? (see recent discussions of XJ12 model years)

If anyone has a copy of this CD could they check for Xj40 based
XJ12 info or perhaps loan it to me to take a look?–

I don’t have a copy of JHM1145, I do have JHM1126 V1.1, which does not cover
anything past 1991. However, these things are updated pretty frequently,
for example on the J-L JDHT page, updated in September

http://www.jag-lovers.org/jagcds.php3

it now says that JHM1126 covers cars through 1992, so there may be a newer
version out. The best thing might be to e-mail Mrs. Simpson
(jsimps16@jaguar.com) and ask about what’s included in the currently
available CD.

The updated J-L page says that JHM1145 covers the 1994-1995 XJ12, and that
information was the basis of my reply to Hsiu Peng, who has a '94 XJ12. I
suppose that he could also order the XJ40 CD (JHM1126) to be sure he gets
info re: the XJ40, they are pretty inexpensive, but as I said there is no
information about the V12 in the latter CD.

Again, a direct query to JDHT will resolve any questions, I’ve found Mrs.
Simpson to be very nice to correspond with.

Hsiu has an interesting e-mail address (hppeng@marvell.com), it must be fun
to work at that pinnacle of comic book enterprises - my son and I love
Spidey!

Best regards and Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to all (as appropriate),

Hi Dave:

I’m not working in comic enterprise. I’m doing semiconductors.

Thanks for your information.

the hppeng stands for Hsiu P. Peng. That’s it!

Sorry Hsiu, I typed Marvel.com into my browser rather than Marvell.com to
see where you were based. My apologies for the misinformation (unless you’d
really rather work for Marvel! :-))
