Davo,

Welcome to the forum.

Timing chain wear / tensioner failure is a common / frequent
problem on 2.9 SOHC engines in the XJ40. AFAIK, the only
solution is to replace the timing chain and tensioner -
i.e. no adjustments are available.

There was a good article on this procedure in the UK Car
Mechanics magazine some years ago with detailed step-by-step
illustrated (in colour!) instructions on how to do it. That
article (along with others) was reproduced in the Kelsey
Publishing Jaguar Monthly (now JWM) magazine ‘‘Jaguar XJ40 -
Buying and Maintenance’’, still available from Kelsey:-

A very worthwhile investment - as is the JDHT CD-Rom for
your car, JHM1173 which contains the factory service manuals
and parts catalogues:-

Good luck!–
